Xtra Cab useable space
Hey All,
I have been on the look out for a used clean 89-94 Toyota Pickup 22re 4x4 Xtra Cab 5spd for the past 2 weeks near the SFbay area. But have had no luck than finding one rusted truck. They seem to be so hard to come by!! or insanely expensive!
I can find many 22re 4x4 without extra cab! .... Im thinking of ditching the xtra cab, but somehow i find myself really liking to have it.
Also, for ppl who have xtra cab, can two ppl sit at the back?

I have a 90 ext cab with the 3.0 I can kinda understand why you want a 22r but honestly the 3.0 has more hp and better gas mileage also its prolly a cheaper truck to buy.Plus the 3.0 comes with v6 axles Just make sure you get a 5 speed the autos blow power wise.I have the 3.0 and Im at 230 something thousand miles on original headgasket and to me that is the only reason why someone would get the 22r over the 3.0 is the head gasket but if you take care of it it will take care of you
and to answer your question no two people can't fit back there unless they are below 4 feet and don't mind being squished.

Yaah, Im trying to stay away from a v6 coz blowing a headgasket while being on trip just scares me! I intend to explore some back roads in CA.
the price of a v6 is so much cheaper than 22re, I think it might be cheaper to just swap the v6 for a 22re.. lol + v6 comes with SR5 package
I figured that the extra cab is sort of useless.

yeah dude, i have a single cab and it sucks. a long time ago i had 2 different ext. cabs one with a 22RE and one with a V6. i miss the extra space. and i like the look more
i have been looking for a decent ext cab with a blown 22re to swap mine into, but i can't find one thats not rotted out.
there are plenty of V6's around but i love my 22re, it screams

x cab looks better imo. Also the extra room to throw a backpack or tools or whatever behind the seat is great. you can get two people in the back if they are umpalumpas. I can get three people in my truck comfortably. two in the front and one sitting sideways in the back. More than that and its getting pretty cramped in there. I did have 5 people in my xcab taco just a week ago. 3 people in the back. It was a pretty funny site to see. Luckily we only had to go a few miles.

i've had passengers in the back of my xcab before. i've even sat there (in the driveway) to see what it's like. it's definitely cramped although doable if there's no choice. the thing I didn't like was having to move driver seat forward because it's more difficult to push in the clutch and change gears. I'm 5'10" and always drive with the 60/40 bench all the way back and reclined. i'm sure for kids, it'd be ok, but anyone who's sane probably wouldn't want to sit there. 1 person, sideways, is better.
my one complaint about the xcab is the lack of technology in the early 90s to make access doors to the rear. my neighbor's got a newer taco and both sides open up. i'm not jealous though...'cuz he got a prerunner, ewww....
xcabs are hard to come by especially with a 22re and 5spd 4wd. if you do find one, it'll probably be around $4-5000 in CA. honestly, idk why anyone would ever want to drive a single cab...unless you like steering with your teeth, or it's a work truck for your employees, or need the wheelbase for crawling (but even then, i'd put an xcab on that frame). i have sat in a new single cab tundra and that cab is so big it's like an xcab.
norcalsvx - you haven't sold that rig yet? man i remember seeing that on CL months ago! congrats on the baby!

take a look at cragslist Los Angeles or even San Diego... That's where I got mine. Southern California is the way to go for rust free toyota metal. Sure it could be a nice long drive, but you don't even have to cross state lines! Just my experience.

I have the 91 4wd 3.0 xcab. I got six people in it one time. 3 in the front 3 in the back, but is was cramped as hell. i don't think i'm ever going to do it again.

What? Better gas milage? I don't think so. I thought most people were getting 14-16 with the v6. I get 17-21 with my 22re extra cab. I would wait and find a 22re truck. I stay far away from 3slows. Hard to work on (no room). You can rebuild a 22re for well under $1000 (not that you ever have to if you look after it). Try doing that with a 3slow.
22re extra cabs are hard to find. Up here all toys are rusted. But most extra cabs are V6. I see a lot of 95+ 2.7l though. I think that will be my next truck.

i say go 22re, but im biased.
i got all of you beat. i have a 88 single cab, and ive fit 6 people in there. trust me it wasnt comfortable, and it will never happen again. had to go only 10 miles, but it felt like 10 years. 3 on the bench, 3 smallest behind the seat, on top of each other. (yes, ive actually done that!) NEVER AGAIN.
and the carburated models with the xtra cab r easier to find down here.

Edit: Oh and for the 22re 3vze argument, i would definitely go 22re, the 3vze hardly makes more power than the 22re and it eats gas. It will last if your lucky but if you get a lemon, your looking at endless repairs

I don't have the xtra cab, but wish i did. As others have mentioned, the space is really small in terms of being able to have people sit back there. The two main reasons I would love to have that space are 1) to be able to recline my seat more, and 2) to have room for other random things like tools, groceries, bags, etc. If I'm going to the store with someone else, all the groceries or whatever else has to go in the back, which really sucks if it's raining. And since I'm 6'3, I have the seat slid all the way back, meaning the upright part of the seat is almost completely vertical. It would be really nice to be able to recline it a bit!
