Will the SR5 gauge cluster bolt right on and connect?
Just landed a DLX model truck and really want tach/volts
/oil pressure..do you guys know if the cluster out of the SR5 will just bolt right in if I can figure out the sending units/connections?
thanks so much for any advice,
Donnie

First you need to figure out if you have a mechanical or electronic speedometer. Easy to tell if you look at the back of your cluster.
Second, if the donor sr5 cluster does not match your motor (sr5 v6 cluster into a 22re DLX for example), you will need to take apart the cluster and use a multimeter and screwdriver to adjust the tach to read correctly.
Third, you need an oil pressure sending unit from an SR5 that fits your motor.
User iamsuperbleeder made a thread that helped me through the whole process.

When i did mine the tach wire was missing from the harness but that was it. Had to figure out where to connect on the plug and ran my own. It was a v6 cluster to my 22re. Everything worked fine as is.

On my 89 4Runner DLX, the cluster "bolted" in.
The Tach came from another manual 4cyl, so the tach worked.
I knew the Oil Pressure sender is not compatible with the idiot light, so disconnected it for now.
I run a mechanical oil pressure and a mechanical oil temp gauge, so Im not worried about it being disconnected.

Thanks so much you guys. I checked and it's a mechanical speedo 22R cluster that the seller has available. My truck is a 22RE so should be good there. Just need to check my speedo to see if it's cable or electrically driven..
Also, on the oil pressure sending unit..Can I just buy one at the local Napa for a truck with the SR5 4 cylinder package?
Thanks again,
Donnie

What year is your truck?
All trucks made on or before 1989 are Cable driven. I have heard that 1992 was the first year for an electric speedometer but I have no idea if that is true.
For the Oil Pressure Sending unit, you can get it from NAPA just as long as you tell them it is for the SR5 package. The SR5 senders are more expensive then the switch that you currently have.
I went with an OEM Sending unit when buying other parts through an online dealer.

If I remember right - you need to squeeze the side clips to get it too release.
Getting it off is bad, getting it to "clip" is often worse..
Keep at it - it does go on!

Ok, thanks brother. You mean the "clips" for the whole cluster? It looks like it would just un bolt, un clip and come straight out but I guess that's not going to be the case.

You can pull the cluster forward (after unbolting) maybe 1" or so.
Then you have to reach a hand back behind the cluster to detach the speedo cable.
BTW - Since getting the cluster off is so much fun - replace the "night light" bulbs in the cluster (2 if I recall)

Get under the truck and you will see the speedometer cable is held in place with some clips. Remove the cable from the clips and that will give you about 6 more inches to pull the cluster forward. I can usually stand out side the truck and look thru the windshield and see the clip to release it from the cluster. Yours being an 88 it is cable driven.

Does anyone happen to know if the front clear glass piece is the same from the SR5 to the non SR5 cluster? I mean to where I could take the glass off of mine and put it onto another one?

The clear plastic is physically the same size but the black plastic frame that they are attached to are different. I don't remember if they are glued together or if they snap together but they will need to be seporated. The SR5 cluster also has a hole molded into it for the trip meter reset shaft.
You can make either work as long as you can separate the black plastic frame from the clear plastic lens without breaking it. You will need to use the black frame from the cluster you are going to use and attach it to the clear lens from the old cluster. If you are using a regular cluster lens for the SR5 lens, you will need to drill the hole out for the trip meter reset shaft.
I think others on here have successfully done this but I have never needed to.
I hope that helps!
