I replaced mine with a Magnaflow $60 new converter last summer and failed a smog emissions test today. The rest is in tune, so the mechanic said he often sees this problem with cheap converters.

Where can I get an OEM quality one? How much is it from Toyota? (eek scared!)
Any decent aftermarkets that are better?

Well i dont know if it would help smog but a high flow cat is nice, but spendy, and like i said, i dont know if that would help you pass smog.

Might want to go in to toyota and see what that will run you.

I bought a bolt in cat from my local Autozone for $110 with lifetime warranty. I don't know why they put a lifetime warranty on it, but I'm not complaining.

A new OEM converter will set you back about $800. I had to replace the one on our '91 4Runner after it was stolen.

Just get any old high flow cat. I have used them for years and had no smog issues at all with any on numerous models of vehicle.

If the Magnaflow cat was 50 state legal then I'd be calling Them about replacing your cat or refunding your money.

Depends on what part of the test you failed. I'd have a hard time believing it was a year old cat that caused it. Possible, but not probable. Give us some numbers of what your Yota blew. Also, be sure of your smog shop. Many moons ago, I took my '83 to a shop and it failed MISERABLY. Did some thinking and checking around, took it to another shop, it passed. Called BBB on the former's arse.

I wouldn't put money into it 'til you find out what caused you to fail. Throwing darts in the dark that way.

I can't see a shop giving a 55-60% discount... sounds like you got hosed by whomever sold you the converter in the first place.

oh how I hate salt! But I love how I have a pipe shuved right through my cat!!! Oh Canada! those things are worth a lot at the junk yard let alone to actually buy and use. GL man. I'd go check a yota dealership or just a muffler shop. Yota would cost a fourtune, maybe some muffler guys know of a cheap one that passes.

I don't know. According to the Magnaflow reference you gave, their converter #23886 is a direct fit for a 94 PU (which is what I have) and goes for $261. Summit racing offers Magnaflow #23886 for $101 and claims it's a direct fit for the 94 Toyota. I can offer no reason for the discrepancy, but it seems that there might be a lot of padding in the suggested retail price.

I could be wrong. I don't know the jobber pricing on their converters so I suppose it's a possibility.

#23884 is the Magnaflow cat I got on ebay new.

The HC is the test that failed.
For the 15mph it was 229ppm, max allowable 118ppm.
The 25mph was 97ppm, max allowable 98ppm, so barely passed that.

All other emissions were far under limits.

This is a catalytic issue most likely right? Plugs/cap/rotor/wires/Denso O2 sensor are about a year old.
I blocked off the EGR, is that affecting it?

I bought one from kragen after the one on my wifes 4runner was stolen, was around $110. Direct Bolt on passed smog with no problems
