i need to take a thread chaser and clean the threads out in the block but i dont know the thread pitch on them could anyone tell me so i can get the right one?

also how to check for warpage with the straightedge....neone got any images?

I'm not sure on the threads but..

To check for a straight edge, take a flat piece of stock steel or something similar and a feeler gauge and set it across and use the feeler gauge between combustion chambers and on the ends.. if you can fit it under easily, your cyl head is probably warped.


It's a good idea to get it machined flat anyway if you're doing a headgasket.. clean mating surface just helps the headgaskets life span.

I'd bet fair to large sums of money they are fine thread, probably 1.25 pitch, maybe 1.0 pitch - oh and finding that tap is gonna be a PITA

x2 on finding the tap. Try a hardware store or you will have to try your local tool supply.

It's not that it's metric - it's that it's fine thread.

I wouldn't even bother looking at Ace, etc - you'll need to find a REAL tool shop, and they'll probably have to order it.

Can't remember the specs on the tap, but you end up having it ordered. ABC Auto here in St. George, which pulls some crazy stuff out of the back room, had to order my friend one when he bought his.

Any decent hardware store should have a 12mmX1.25 tap (Google is your friend. So is a thread gauge). I got one at Ace locally. A thread chaser would be safer; will remove a bit less material. I used a tap because it was convenient, but then, I am using ARP studs too, so I would feel OK with that, but YMMV.

I use a head bolt with a groove cut into it. Works great, and is not as aggressive as a tap. Head bolt threads is one of the last places I'd use a tap.
