what year 22r ??????
ok i have a 94 truck with what i though was the original motor, but when i was taking it apart i noticed some differences. like the pistons have real long skirts and the top of the pistons do not have valve reliefs also the head does not have the pear shaped ports it has 2 big and 2 litte ones on top (i will get a pick of what im talking about in a min). so im thinking i have an old motor like 83-84 and was wondering if the 94 rebuild kit i bought will work? is there any thing bad about using the older head power wise (if thats what ive got)
Thanks Ryan

the only real difference is the block. the older ones are taller. the kit should be the same with the only difference being the pistons and the timing cover. on the side of the block is a number what is that???

If that is the exhaust side of the head then it looks like you have the older style 22r because the newer ones have the pear shaped exhaust ports and yours are round.

Nevermind. Your picture of the piston is a pop up piston which was only used in 81-84 blocks. You have an 81-84 block. What your engine consists of that would be different than the 85 and newer engines:
Round exhaust ports
Pop-up pistons
82 cc combustion chamber
dual row timing chain
short oil pump housing

You have what's called a pre-1984 22R. The heads and exhaust ports look identical to mine, round instead of pear-shaped. The main difference between the 22R and the 22RE you originally had, is the pistons: 22R has domed pistons, 22RE has flat. Obviously the 22RE is fuel injected, 22R is carbed. Both have a sinlge-row timing chain. Since the manifold is different between the two, and easy way to tell is that the 22RE has a flange-type O2 sensor, the 22R is bolt-on.
I would guess that the rebuild kit will not work. The head gaskets are different between the 22R and the 22RE for starters. As far as the compression rings, I would a ASSUME they are different.
Hopefully someone with a little more experience than me will chime in soon.

well this motor ive got with the dome type pistons was fuel injected, thats what was throwing me off. i have one more question if i use the old block and buy a 85+ head and then use the 85+ pistons will that work?????

nope. the crank and rods are the same between the 2, but the piston wrist pin in lower and the combustion chamber in the head is larger. There's nothing wrong with using the '84 block. In fact, you can get a double row timing chain without having to modify the timing cover (you need a 20R timing chain kit & 20R oil pump drive spline)
If you're worried about the gasket kit that you already have and you can't return it, then just match up the gaskets as you go. The majority of the gaskets should work, timing cover gasket won't.
