i have a 1993 toyota pickup 3.0 4x4. I am trying to find the knock sensor and i've already had the intake off and no luck. I've had it at two auto shops and no luck. Can you help me??????????????????????????????????

TNRabbit, thanks. I did purchase new bodies for my injector plugs. I simpled broke the old brittle plastic from around the pins, and pushed the pins into the new casings.

I realize now that I should replace my 236k injectors also. This source sounds good at about $37 per injector:
Remanufactured Multi Port Injector 842-12130 GB Remanufacturing from "Rock Autoparts."
Does anyone know about GB injectors? They preach about being the best in remaned original parts.

Regarding the timing belt: remember that the cams are underdriven 2:1 (as with any four-stroke engine). I was reminded of this when I changed my timing belt last fall. One crank revolution retarded the two cam timing marks by two cam teeth. I intially cursed and rotated the engine backwards to the starting point. Not recommended but whatever. All three marks re-aligned perfectly. Hmmm. So I started turning the crank manually clockwise again (with the plugs out) enough times that, eventually, all three marks -- crank, passenger's side cam and driver's side cam -- re-aligned perfectly. Because it was late, I didn't count how many revolutions it took to come full circle -- 12 on a 6-cyl. engine? Nonetheless, with everything back together, the engine fired right up with a brief twist of the key.

i was curious as to what transmission fluid is he recomending if purchased trough a toyota dealer? Regular ATF or the newer TYPE T4?

You don't need to go through a dealer. Any retro-compatable Dextron-type ATF from well-known mfgs. is okay (Mobil, Shell, Amsoil, Redline, etc.).

i AM the dealer and fluid is pennies for me! i would like to know if OP recomends TOYOTA ATF or will TOYOTA TYPE T4 be the better upgrade?

Another thing; after dicking around with various intake setups, I put back everything including the intake silencer and just run my 13-year-old K&N drop-in -- cost me $30.

So i'm looking to buy another 4runner with a 3.0 and I asked the guy about the timing belt and he said we was unsure and that there was no sticker on the fan shroud. Is there a way to check when the timing belt was last replaced? I am not sure if Toyota did it or an independent mechanic so I think finding the history online may be tricky.

This thread rules! OP is right about the OEM starter eventually giving you an intermittent 'click' sound / croaking after a while -_- (Mine did this at about 147k) and it is very hard to remove/install! I was able to get to it through the passenger side wheel well/laying underneath it. I ended up having to disconnect my clutch line (and bleeding it of course afterwards with the help of my girlfriend lol) to install the new one and I can tell you it is not very fun, but well worth it!

A few other things I've replaced on my 3vz-e since I've owned it (over a year now), is fuel filter (way more responsive to gas pedal), timing belt/drive belts, water pump, alternator, and just recently the starter/battery. I love working on it, and driving it even more hehe.

You can get the dealer to run the VIN to get any repair history done at a Toyota dealer. Aside from that, pretty hard to tell if they changed the timing belt.

Do the 3VZEs have push rods? Someone was telling me that since they have overhead cams there is no push rod. Is that accurate?

What would a push rod do if the cam is right above the valves? (Push rods are for old-style cams gear-driven from the crank, and so near the bottom of the engine. The push rod rides on the cam, and reaches up to the rocker arms above the valves at the tops of the cylinders.)
