What do you use?

What weight oil and brand do you guys run in your yotas? seems when i run 10-30 i have oil pressure drop at idle. when I change to 15-30 problems go away. put 10-30 in tonight to see if i was right and the oil pressure does drop when idling.

i use 5w-30 amsoil in my rig and oil pressure is always below the first low mark on the dash but think about it more pressure is less flow

low oil pressure at idle is usually one or more of the following:
low idle speed, worn oil pump/leaking pressure relief valve or worn crankshaft/cam bearings or rocker arms/shafts....
... generally speaking.
otoh... you only need 7-10 psi pressure at idle

*smack!*
the oiling system is designed to have a certain amount leakage around bearings and other places, so more pressure means the oil can go to the other places it's needed. there is a point where too much pressure can cause damage like spun bearings, but when that happens there's something else broken
not enough pressure means the oil doesn't go very far in the engine.

you have to have pressure. less is not better. pressure is caused by restriction. if you aren't getting enough pressure that means something isn't working like it should...

I find on my '85 if I run anything lighter than 10W40, the hot idle pressure drops pretty low on the stock gauge. With 15W40, it stays up in the normal range at idle, so that is what I typically run.

4crawler, would you recommend 15w40 for a vehicle at altitude (mile high city baby)? I am in the process of installing a brand new engine and want to treat her right.

Probably be fine for the warmer months. You may need something thinner for the winter, depending on how cold it gets there. I run the 15W40 year round as it rarely gets below freezing where I live.

I run Castrol 10w30 high mileage; love the stuff. No problems with it here in Fl. Also add a quart of stabilizer every change. 285k on the odometer, I think I can spare the $8 for the extra protection, lol.

The gauge isnt accurate, not at all. I ran all kinds of stuff and it never reads right unless I have what 4crawler uses and thats some THICK OIL!

Quaker State 10W30 here, all year. 480+ k (over 300K mi), runs perfectly. $2/litre.
