My 1987 has spend most of its life in new orleans, and is mostly rust free, as in better than my dads 2000 chevy. Just some bubbles around the rear wheel wells. I want to prevent rust both on the frame and on the body so what would you guys suggest with winter coming up? I just put on mudflaps which should help alot with salt building up on the rocker panels.

I have heard of spraying the wheel wells with wd-40 and putting oil in the frame while its sitting on a hill with the back end up. I havent done either but would those ideas be a good start? and what else could i do?

I spilled about 4 quarts of auto trans fluid in the back of my truck hauling a used trans and I can tell you i just now cleaned it out after 3 months and it beads water like crazy had to srcub with degreaser 2 times and use the car wash sprayer to get it out.And It would be very easy to spray out of a pump sprayer its so thin

This summer, I removed both bumpers, wire brushed the insides and front frame members, and used a product called "Rust Bullet". This product chemically combines with the rust and turned it into iron phosphate which is inert. I shall see how it holds up. Some have used a product called POR15 and lots of guys have had great results. Its all in the prep, as to how effective these products work. My 2 cents!!

Move to a dry climate!!

Only drive on dry roads .

If you venture out any where they use liquid brine a good pressure washing when you get home.

This stuff is very hard on the brake and fuel lines.

I've found WD-40 works best. That's what it was made for - Water Displacement formula 40 - the first 39 tries didn't work. Spray it into any rust bubble, bondo crack (Worked great on my old FJ40) or anywhere else rust is likely to spring up. You're supposed to reapply it every year and depending on the climate I'm sure that's a good idea, but I haven't done it in a few years now. Good timing on the thread! I'll do it again tomorrow!
