westjohns super slow broke build, 87 pu!

well here it is, its gonna be a long and slow process since im only 17 working in a pizza store LOL! but anyways, ive finally got my hands on an 87 toyota pickup, carborated 22r with a 5 speed with 4x4. i bought it needing the old mudded out 22r rebuilt. took it to my uncle carl who owns a machine shop here and town and bored the block .20 over and thew it all back together with a low end cam, so far so good, threw it in the truck with a new distributor, water pump, cluch, master cyclinder, starter and a bunch of other seals gaskets and lines, now that the motors in i decided to take it out for a test driver and come to find out, there is no steering, brakes or lights hahah! but what can u expect from a 600$ truck, as of right now its in my driverway until tommorow! payyydaaayy! would love to upload some pics but there to big? any ideas how to change the formatt size of them?? ive got ALOT!

Lets see if that works.

So you should probably use something like POR-15 on the frame instead of just paint. It'll last longer and help stop rust.

Yeah it's a little pricey but costs less than a frame replacement. I don't know if you have to deal with rust in Florida but would guess you do since there is the ocean there and all that. While you have the time take a look at all your brake lines and fuel lines and check those for pitting/rust/issues. They are easier to fix with the bed removed. Also check the LSPV for rust/corrosion/issues since it's easy to get to.

Oh and let us know how the front end rebuild goes. (I responded to your other thread on the steering issues).

yeah its not bad at all really, u would figure it would be with humidy and the salt ocean and what not but my only real rust are in those pesky seams on the bed and even then only 1 quarter panel is beyond reapir, the other 3 could almost be patched and as far as the front end rebuild does i found a guy whos doing an SAS and offered all his new front end parts ( linkages, joints, cv axles, tire rods, and both a arms, this also a 5in lift so he says) for 150$, hes got anything else u would want off the truck if you need so ill probaly go that route, and the brakes just need replaceing altogether along ith the fuel lines but i already have those, i will keep you updated with pics for sure!

If you can get the entire front end for 150$ then take it, you can always uses the extra parts. Keep the CV's for spares, knock the studs out of the axle and replace them with bolts for easier change outs on the trail, and replace everything you have with better stuff. Buy new ball joints (grease them after install) and keep the tie rod ends, tie rod, and steering damper for spares.

I still don't know if you plan to wheel the crap out of this rig of yours but if you do keep spares on hand. I wheel my little rig once in a while so I don't break much but spares are always nice to have.

Oh and if you get the Aisin hubs from that guy you can rebuild them, put them on your rig, and have a full set of spares or sell the rebuilt ones. Don't ever go with Warns or some other crap, keep the factory hubs. They are freaking bullet proof.
