Maybe some of you have some idea about this.

I was prepping for a trip from Atlanta to Detroit and accidentally drained out some trans fluid (tired, and drained the trans pan instead of oil) so I refilled it to spec and drove to Detroit.

I checked the fluid level after I got here and it looked to be over half a quart overfilled. Looked right when I left. weird. It's at the right level now for sure. I think it's a 4 speed auto, right? anywho, when I start the truck cold and drive it it'll tach to around 3200 and stay there for a long time (miles) before hitting OD. It seems to be right after it warms up.

Is that a problem or is it just that I've never noticed it before I started paying attention to it. I know about engines but not a lot about transmissions.

Thoughts?

Did you fill it up as you would if you pulled the pan completely off? Because there very well could have been a half quart left over in the pan even if you drained it. Pulling the pan is really the only way to get all of the fluid out.

No. As soon as I realized what happened I put the drain plug back in. I couldn't tell exactly how much was lost because I have a sealed drain pan to catch the oil and whatnot.

I caught it pretty quick so I probably only lost a little over half a quart. I replaced what I thought was lost and checked the levels according to the manual.

go by the dip stick, always check the transmission fluid hot, as in driven for 15mins, at least, before hand and with the selector in neutral. If its high after this...then drain a little bit out, and try again!

When it shifts from 3rd to OD, after the truck warms up does it stop?? Or after a while does it go away?

It sounds perfectly normal.
That tranny will not shift into OD until it is up to operating temp.

After the truck warms up it shifts fine. When it's cold it seems to stay in 3rd at 3200-3400 rpm for a long time before it kicks over to OD.

Might be perfectly normal. I just never payed attention to it before I thought something might be wrong.

That is 100% perfectly normal behavior.

These transmissions take quite a while for the fluid to drain back to the pan. It is possible that you added fluid before it all settled and added too much.

When checking the fluid, make sure you run it for at least 10 miles, and leave the engine running while in park. My truck takes about 4-5 minutes for all the fluid to drain to the pan to get an accurate reading. If you check it right away, it will appear low and you will overfill it.
