weird random motor tick

i am having the most random motor tick. It is a 95 3.0 5 speed truck. I initially thought it was a rod knock but it does not seem to fit the profile. The motor makes no noise when cold the oil pressure has acted the same since I got the truck almost 2 year ago. When it gets to half of normal operating temperature it starts to tick when I let of the accelerator and shift and slightly makes the noise when i let the clutch out to reaccelerate. under normal driving conditions shifting at 3K it would barely make any noise. When you drive easy it will come and go sometimes at 2250RPM. If I pull the RPM's to 4500 RPM you can not hear it. Under heavy load (2500 5th gear floor it) it does not make any noise.

Has any one experienced anything like this? Please help I am at wits end trying to figure this out.

Maybe you're hearing the fuel injectors? The ECU can vary the injectors' opening time and sometimes you will hear a 'tick' from them. The injectors are, after all, just little electical coils that operate a mechanical valve to allow fuel through. That mechanical valve, or 'pintle', can make noise as it closes or opens. Also, EGR passes are succeptible to gasket leaks. Sometimes sparkplug wires can make noise if they are shorting out somewhere.
Honestly, there is not enough information to make a diagnosis and some of the information is vague.
What I gather is-
while accelerating there is no noise
light/part throttle cruising there is 'occasional' noise
off throttle (throttle closed/engine slowing down to shift) there is lots of noise
based on that: too much ignition advance, faulting knock sensor circuit, faulting EGR valve or modulator or valve adjustment required or noisy injectors

On the other hand a rod knock sounds nothing like an exhaust leak or valve tick. If you had a 22re I'd suggest the timing chain as a likely culprit.

Its not injector noise. What I have been able to gather I think its either a very minor scaring on a rod or main bearing or its clutch noise (like a broken spring or loose flywheel.) If you need me to clarify on anything let me know. I wish I could record it and play it for you guys to hear.

Hmmm I had something very similar...It would run fine cold, heat up a bit and start to rattle untill I shut it off and let it cool back down.
I thought it was my timing chain or a rod people on here thought it was an exaust leak. Took it to a mechanic and he dident know what was going on either.
When that stuff happened I was a good 9 hours from home working out of town...I ended up having to drive it with the rattle; after an hour of driving when I got to the next town the rattle mysteriously vanishes and has not returned in three months...knock on wood (not a rod)

Sorry I cant be any more help...oh I will post the vid I had up so you can compare.

Mine does this too - around 2200-2500rpm, it's a fast tick, sounds almost plastic. I've been told (and agree) that it's injector tick. I ran Seafoam through the gas tank and it quieted it down, which corroborates with that.

I think a lot of Toyota engines make odd but harmless noises. Mine does, it worried me a the start, now its just part of the Toyota experience.

Anyone care to back me up on this one?

Ive had a tick since i bought the truck 3 months ago and about 5k miles. Its hasent got any worse or better. Its has run great the whole time. my last truck was a 22re 5 spd and had a tick aswell started at about 220.000 miles and it went another 30 thousand without a problem. then i sold it for twice what i bought it for. That was a mistake though

i appreciate the input...I used a scope and listened to the injectors it sounds different and seems to echo through the engine...mine is a 3.0 not the 22re...I have had 2 Toyota master techs listen to it and can not figure it out. Do I just sell it, tear it down, or drive it till it breaks?

I hate the magical mystery noises from motors.

thanks

Update. Just finished using a mechanics scope (with some help from a friend so I could listen to the bottom of the motor). The noise just echos throughout the entire motor. It does not seem to fit the profile of a rod or main bearing. My buddy thinks that it might be piston slap. Has anyone had that happen to them on a 3.0???

thanks

Mine has had the tick since i bought it 6 yrs ago, could be any number of things...fuel injectors, valve clearance.. piston slap...etc... I think my tick is due to worn valves...still runs good though.
