Well, I just put a new upper ball joint, new end links, new shocks in my 4wd ext cab. drives great, no noise, smooth, good ride etc.

I decided to go full lock on the steering wheel, and drive around in a couple of circles outside our shop.

All of a sudden there was a jarring metal on metal noise, that was very brief, and wasnt repititive.

Im almost possitive its not CV's, becausethere was no clatter or noise taking normal everyday turns, and the boots are good, etc.

My friend cant see any kind of metal on metal contact when Im at full lock, and it doesnt do it consistantly.

wtf? We're possitive its coming from the front end? maybe the balljoint is just seating itself?

Steering stops. Rub anti-seize over the little nubs that look like this:



There are 4 in total- 2/side.

Steering stops. There are two in the front and two on the rear. The factory uses plastic caps. These work great for a few years then they wear a hole in themselves. And its metal on metal. It rusts and theres your noise.

I slap some grease on them everytime I change my oil.

that would make total sense, as it seems to only happen when the wheel moves over and goes just a little past full lock.

It sounds like metal is grabbing then slipping bad, which would be just like a bolt head scraping the crap out of an A arm.

Heh, I know I asked this when I got my truck. But that was a year ago. I had more specific questions though, as I had already been searching for "steering stops" before I posted. :-)

Funny that, I seartched and couldnt find anything.

I think this website should take a lesson from a bigger, more thought out and designed forum based website, like www.vwvortex.com, which has 100's of thousands of users, and make more stickys and DIY stickys.

Mind you, Ive posted a few thousand times over there, so I treat 'newbs' about the same way.

But, in fact, it wasnt the adjustment bolts grinding.

IT WAS AN IDLER ARM.



Guess even veteran yotatech guys can get it wrong sometimes.

That particular noise is more often than not the steering stops. It is hard to diagnose a noise over the internet obviously, so stop trying to be an internet gangster.
