Water temp sender in top hose

Water temp sender in top hose
I plan on installing a real aftermarket gauge for water temp in my 22re. I am getting some overshooting on the stock gauge so I'd like to figure out what is really going on with a real gauge. But now that I think about it, do I want the sender in the top radiator hose like is common? Given the ease of installation, that is where I'd like to put it. But wouldn't it be more accurate if it read before the thermostat? I want to keep the stock gauge quasi operational so I don't want to ditch that sender. I'm just thinking that if the tstat got stuck closed it the motor would overheat before I knew about it, right? Anyone have it in the top hose and getting satisfactory readings?

There is an updated two stage thermostat that is suposed to fix the temperature guage over shoot. You might give that a shot before going to the trouble of installing a new temp guage.

I put a mechanical gauge in the tstat housing. The sensor reads the coolant temp after it goes through the tstat. So, you're right, the gauge is inaccurate, at least until the thermostat opens. But it seems like the hottest coolant is going to be the coolant exiting the engine and going into the radiator, right?
So far it's done a good job. My efan with a Hayden-type controller comes on at very predictable temperatures as reported by the gauge, which tells me that its readings are pretty consistent.

Already did just that and it still overshoots. Really frustrating. Going to try a single stage t stat with a hole drilled in it and see if that makes any improvement. This is one of the reasons why I want a real temp gauge to figure out what is really happening in there.

So I bought the LC Engineering aluminum sleeve/manifold for the top hose with the port for the temp gauge sender. There is a smalle screw on the side of the manifold. Is this for the sender ground? Can I ground on this even though it is aluminum and such a small piece of metal that is not even connected to the motor? I was assuming I'd need to ground out on the block somewhere.
