W56B Trans Reassembly Problem

1988 Pickup 4x4 22R-E 5-speed (W56, six bolt shift tower) 230K miles (approx)

Reassembling W56 trans after replacing input shaft bearing.

When I test shifting the shift mechanism gets stuck - near as I can tell the link rod gets stuck behind what the manual calls the reverse restrict pin (pinned into inside of transfer adapter, NOT the ones that thread into the outside of the shift lever housing).

Example: If I shift into 5th I can shift 5th out of engagement (no connection between input or output), and back into engagement, but not into neutral or reverse.

If I shift into reverse I can't shift out of reverse.

In order to free the linkage I have to knock the roll pin that retains the reverse restrict pin out, unbolt the shift lever and shift/select lever, and remove the transfer adapter.

I didn't remove this reverse restrict pin during disassembly so I don't think it's a matter of being assembled incorrectly.

The manuals I'm looking at don't go into any detail on the function of the device or any specific instructions to follow while reassembly.

I'm wearing out the threads on the bolt holes putting this together and taking it apart, but I don't want to put it back into the truck until I'm sure it's functioning properly.

What am I missing or messing up? I've tried every reasonable search term to look thru the forums, and even a few unreasonable ones, and haven't come up with anything similar.

Thanks!

Additional Info

After posting, I went back out and dry-fit the shift mechanism in the transfer adapter and function-checked it. I don't see how the reverse restrict pin can be affecting the shift / select function, so now I'm looking at the interlock mechanism and detent springs in the intermediate plate and will search the forums accordingly.

I would appreciate any input in that direction.

Thanks!
