W56 grinding like crazy (Need rebuild?)

I bought my 88 4runner about a month ago and have been seriously considering a tranny rebuild.

The issue is in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. When I shift into these gears there is a crunch (No big deal, syncros maybe? Doesn't worry me too much.) But once I am in gear there is this horrible grinding noise. It gets a lot worse and more noticeable when I let off the gas. You can hear it while accelerating but once I lift my foot of the pedal it starts crunching and grinding and it is very annoying.

I've been trying to read up on this and (I'm assuming here) I think maybe I just need some new syncros and some new bearings for those gears? 4th gear is CHERRY, being thrown in to 4th sounds good and no grinding...

If I need to rebuild I was going to get Mar Craw to do it but the kit alone is 400$ and god knows how much it is to send it and get them rebuild.

Any advice on maybe overhauling as opposed to a rebuild?

THANKS!

Well, appears a bearing has gone bad which throws out shaft alignments. 4th is a magical gear. Either it will often be the noisey one or the quiet one. Both indicative of internal serious problems. Unless you know of a highly recommended manual transmission fixer, send it to Marlin. Their prices appear to be reasonable. And, no good transmission repair is complete without a good clutch repair. A bad clutch can eat new transmission syncros. You are looking at 2G's for all this work unless you do the clutch yourself.

My $0.02

You have shot tranny bearings and synchros. Spendy, but fixable for sure.

Someone else recently posted with similar problems on a w56. If it were me, I would look around and find a used one from a totaled or truck with blown motor. There are quite a few of them out there, so it shouldn't be nearly as expensive as rebuilding one. They are well known for outlasting the engines, so you should be able to find a decent one cheap, but I guess you still run the risk of buying a piece of crap. However, if you find one for around $200, it'll sure save you some money.

Someone is selling one for $225 But I'm thinking shipping must be a killer! It's w/ trans case and everything...

Ah well... I'll call around and try to find a specialist that can replace the syncros and bearings... I just can't afford 2k...

2g,s is a little steep I sell full rebuilds for 850 and shipping is only 100 on a trans, that leaves 1050 for install and clutch?
