Two pinion, how can you tell.

My 4.56 rear got here today (counted the teeth and I've got 9 on the pinion and 41 on the ring) now I need to figure out how to tell if I've got a 2 or 4 pinion.

Can I look inside and see the pinions? I only see one cross pin if that helps.

edit. This might help

If you can see the spider gears and the cross pin it is a two pinion.

Thanks for the reply. Now it's off to Aussie to order a locker, now that I know it'll go in there.

See ya!!

You've shown a picture of a 2-pinion diff. 4-pinion diffs have an enclosed construction, where you cannot see any of the gears inside the diff.

Whoa, I didn't know you could get a OEM 2 pinion 4.56 diff. Are they simply extremely uncommon? From what truck is that diff from?

Matt,
This is the rear from a 1994 Runner with a manual tranny and 4 cyl motor. I don't know if these are hard to find or not. The good thing about this is now I can drop in the Aussie and enjoy all the stuff you talk about with a locker.

The front is on the way and it's a non ADD so I don't have to do anything with it other than another locker and install.
