Turbos, power chips, exhaust?

Anybody have experience with turbos, or power chips in a 4 cylinder? Or what can i do to get maximum power out of my truck?

They don`t make power chips for our trucks, and a turbo set up would cost more than its worth, so don`t waste your time. If you want more power do an engine swap.

Well what can i do to get just a noticeable power difference? exhaust? cold air intake?

there are plenty of mods on here that you can do to get a little or make it run better but its always going to be a 22

no infomercial claims here

what year are you wheeling?

Just keep in mind you have a 4 cyl. engine. Nothing but lots of $$$$$ will get you the power you want.

Cams, header and gears are about the only thing you can do...you already have a cold air intake from the factory on (if you have the 22re) so that's out. About the only thing you can do on the intake side is the ISR mod.

It depends on how much money you want to spend. You can buy a ported head and add a cam, you can add a header and exhaust, and you can do an AFM swap.

Best bang for your buck will be a motor swap, in my opinion. I'm power hungry, and every time I get in my pickup, the 22re lets me down when it comes to the skinny pedal.

yeah i got a 94 with 3 inch lift 33s besides that completly stock, i just want a little extra like manly faster response when i floor it but cleary its just a small motor?

You've got 33" tires? How about some gears. That'll put more pep in your step, especially if you're currently on stock 4:10's!

i highly doubt you have a 3 inch lift. is that what the previous owner told you?

and gears will be your best bet with 33s

you really only have 2 choices with more power 1. motor swap my personal opinion (1uz) 2.turbo Ive seen a lot of people put a small Chrysler turbo on the 22re only because it runs about 5 psi

If I was looking for power, I'd go turbo! If you're resourceful, it shouldn't cost you too much.

-Ebay or junkyard turbo $100
-turbo oil drain kit $10 in parts
-turbo feed line kit $20 in parts
-ebay charge pipe kit $80
-custom turbo manifold, if you can weld and fabricate $~100
-used Air/Fuel computer $100
-ebay wastegate $60
-ebay blow off valve $25

Total cost ~$495

Then take it to a shop and have it dyno tuned and you'll be at ~$600. Depending on how much fuel our injectors and fuel pump can move, you can have as much HP as our blocks can take!

This is the path I'll go if I ever want more power out of my 4runner...

Your missing one very importiant element here...A 22re turbo block. It already has the proper tapped oil return holes for the turbo. Can't run a turbo with out them...unless you plan on drilling them out?

I agree...unless you know how a turbo system works on every level, don't take this approach.

just curious why do you say this? throw in some 4.88s or 5.29s. IMO theres no mod that you can do to 22re's thats worth the small increase in power to the high price youll pay besides gears. throw in a 350, 3.4, 1UZ, 4BT Cummins, or if your feelin real nasty, extend the front, push the firwall back and throw in a 6cyl Cummins. yes its been done before. go on youtube and search cummins 4runner

What did I forget? I checked prices before listing anything here. The only thing I can see that I didn't list are small fittings for the oil drain and feed lines, all of which are included in the price though.

You don't need a 22re turbo block. All you need to do is T-off the oil pressure sensor fitting for a clean oil feed line and drill and weld a fitting onto the side of your oil pan for an oil drain line.

I agree with the not taking this approach without knowing exactly how a turbo works though. I've already turbo'd two of my own personal vehicles and have helped friend's turbo half a dozen of their cars. Although I do believe that with enough research you can learn a lot about turbos online.
