Trucks starts but won't stay running. 89' 22re
Hey all, as the title says, my truck will start up for a second and die in the same motion. After I took the A/C out and put the new radiator in it didn't start at, would just crank. After trying a few times it finally just started up on its own and ran fine for the past two days. I just went to start it and nada. Will run for a second and then shut down. I'm new to working on motors (not gonna lie) but I do have spark, I was thinking maybe a fuel problem.

They are all good, just put in new cables. That was my problem a few days ago when it wouldn't even turn over, then put new cables in and she would turn over. Now she will turn but won't stay running.

if she starts and then dies within a few seconds, then either the afm is having a problem or the circuit opening relay is.
basically, the COR is energized for a few seconds when the key is turned on then releases, and this causes the fuel pump to charge the fuel lines. once the engine starts, the afm has contacts that close that in turn energize the COR and cause the fuel pump to run continuously until either the engine dies or the key is turned off.

Could also be a vacuum leak. I had a small slit in the rubber hose from the hard plastic fitting from the air filter to the throttle body.
Just a thought to check, good luck.

update
I pulled the inlet to the fuel filter and its not pushing any fuel. Guess there is something going on with the fuel pump or could it be with the relay you mentioned?

by MAF, I'm assuming you mean AFM. 22re's don't use a mass air flow sensor.
s.c.i.e.n.c.e.- there are contacts in the afm that sense when the engine is drawing enough air to be considered "running" and turn on the fuel pump.

let's get this thing running then we'll work on the problem in your other thread about the tps.

Hmmm.... do what?
Alright, well I read how to jump it and I didn't get very far. It says to make a connection with the 2 spade ends and insert then into the Fp and B+ terminals. Then it says to follow the test procedure outlined in the Factory Service Manual, which I do not have. What's the next step?

Correction, I just jumped it correctly (newbie, oh well) and I am getting fuel at the fuel filter. The truck will start and run for about 2 second before dying. If I try to restart it it will run for about a second, try to start it again and it won't start at all, just crank. Where do I go from here?

Ok, I know its been awhile but here's some updates. It still won't run so heres whats going on. I just put two and two together and realized that the fuel guage isnt working as well, so maybe a relay is bad that goes to both the fuel pump and the sending unit. (or whatever measures the fuel level is called) I tried to jump the fuel pump, didn't pump any fuel. Pulled the fuel pump out of the tank and then tried jumping it and nothing. Then I hooked the fuel pump up directly to the battery and it does work, well I saw the impeller moving anyway. I checked the efi and ign fuses under the hood and they are good. According the the FSM I need to check the EFI main relay and the circuit opening relay. What do you all think the cause could be. I know someone mentioned the AFM but it seems like a odd coincidence that the fuel guage isnt working and the fuel pump isn't sending any fuel even though it works when hooked up directly to 12volts. Also, why didn't it send any fuel when I tried jumping it?
