1994 2.4L Pickup 4WD:
Engine turns over but has trouble starting in cold temperatures (40 F or below). I normally crank the engine about three times and on the third try I will get combustion. I have replaced the cold start injector but no resolution. Suggestions? - Thank you for your help.

Rarely, if ever, the cold start injectors ever go bad. It's the cold start injector time switch that fails, preventing the cold start injector from cycling on.

Check to make sure the green plug on the front of your engine under the throttle body is plugged in all the way.

I had a similar problem and a new O2 sensor and new fuel pressure regulator helped significantly.

I know you're not going to want to hear this but my truck had all the same symptoms, below 40, sits for a day or two, and it's like you have to crank until fuel comes all the way up from the tank, then once started it runs fine.

I cleaned the cold start injector, measured the injector timer, even replaced the pressure regulator, all no help.

It wasn't until I developed a fuel leak around my gas tank area that I later found was the fuel pump sending unit (Toyota knows this is a common area for leaks, the metal lines coming out of the tank unit rust and start to leak). Luckily for me I was removing my bed for a frame and bed (rust removal) resteration. So with easy access to the top of my fuel tank I replaced both the sending unit and as a precaution the fuel pump as well (while I had it all apart). And whatdayaknow, the truck has been sitting for weeks now while I work on it, and every time I go out to start it, it starts on the first crank EVERY TIME... They often talk about the check valve in the fuel pump??? All I do know is that it's never started this good in many years.

PS, my truck is a 1994 (Minnesota) extended cab 4x4, I found it was easier to take the bed off than it was to attempt to loosen the fuel tank bolts... The bed bolts (8 of them) came off like butter, even with 14 years of crap, crud and corruption on them.

...oh by the way the sending unit was like $150 at the dealer, and I bought an after market fuel pump for $120 at Autozone (the dealerhip wanted $320).
