Exclamation Trouble Codes rich/lean

Hey everyone,
My 89 22re 4x4 has the check engine light on. I jumped the plugs in the diagnostics thing unde the hood and got the codes. I forgot what they were but I remember that the 2 codes were my air/fuel was too rich and it read it was to lean.. The truck does not have a Cat. Guess the guy before me removed it. It doesn't have alot of power and the light does go off sometimes for a lil while but comes back on. When the light is off it runs better. Ifl if I should try to just replace the O2 sensor or get a new cat installed and go from there.. Would a high flow cat be a good choice?

Also, my idle surges when I hit the brakes and hold them. It will bog down, go to normal, then bog, then normal, etc... Heard this could possibly be a vacume leak in my brake system. Problem is idk where.

A working catalytic converter will improve the air quality for everyone. Especially you. But, alas, it is not the cause of your CEL (unless you have a California Truck) because there are no sensors downstream of the converter.

Without the codes I, too, am guessing. But in a truck your age, coupled with the braking issue, it is almost certainly a vacuum leak. It may be other things too, but one step at a time.

I live in Louisiana. Idk is the truck is a Cali emissions truck or not. It does have a sensor about half way down the exhaust about where the bed meets the cab. And I did look up the codes, that's how i know it's reading Rich and Lean.

If you have a rich condition the O2 will go lean, if you have a lean condition the O2 will go rich, so I would look for things that would cause either condition because replacing the O2 won't cure your problem.

Knowing which codes were thrown would be most helpful, because if it is supposed to be a dual-O2 equipped truck, the codes will identify which O2 sensor is throwing whichever code.

Beyond that, reading rich AND lean is more than a little strange, but not impossible, particularly if the ECU hasn't been reset. Pull the EFI fuse (or disconnect the battery) for a few minutes and go drive. Then, when the CEL turns on, pull the code.
