Trouble with ADD 4x4 4wd trouble
Hey guys, I have been searching for awhile and found lots of info just havent't found exactly what i need. I have a 1995 4runner 3.0 4x4 manual, ADD 4x4. The 4wd wont work and this is what I know. No dash light indicator, VSS in fender well is working if manually made to. I do have vacume at the actuator on the diff and if I swap the vac lines the 4x4 will engage also if I unplug the sensor in the diff "i believe it's the ADD indicator switch" I can ground the wiring harness that was plugged into the sensor and the 4x4 will engage, the light will come on and I can hear the VSS switching and working properly. So I'm still unsure if it could be the Indicator switch or something else. Does the indicator switch do more than just turn the light on?

If you bypassed the switch to ground I would suspect the switch is not closing it's contacts. So I agree with you. However, I don't have a wiring diagram so I am assuming from what you are stating. Do you have a multimeter to ohm out the switch?

Yea i have a meter i was going to ohm out the switch until i realized it has fluid behind it and it was already late last night so i figured I would ask on here today and try again.

I did bypass the switch to ground but the shifter still doesnt control the opperation, you have to ground or unground the wire lead to do anything. Also I think there is a position sensor on the t-case i am wondering if this could be the problem?

From what I remember, there is a switch on the side of the t-case that signals the rest of the system to engage. I am bypassing the entire ADD, (plus I kinda destroyed the switch during my swap) so that I will be relying on manual hubs and locking the front axle.

the connection at the transfer case should be a two wire set up, so if u where to jump from one to another it should then switch the relay under the dash and cause it to go into 4wd. if its not doing it when u transfer it when inside the truck then i would check the switch for continuity when in 4wd if there is none then replace it, if still not working i would test to see if there is power back to the switch and if its getting back under the dash to the relay.

What is the 2 wire connection on the diff then? It is connected to a sensor or switch that looks like a temp sensor or something and is screwed into the front off the diff. When u remove the skid plate it is staring right at you. When I ground the wire lead that comes off that it switches the diff and locks in the 4wd.

its a 2 wire because it takes the power to the switch and goes threw it and back to a grounding spot, looking at the wire diagram, if u only have one wire then there might be why u are having problems, now the locations of it im not 100% on.

No.... I have a 2 wire connection, not a 1 wire. No 1 wire anywhere. What I'm saying is the sensor I'm talking about is on the front diff. What is it and why does do? I can activate the vsv's, the indicator light, and lock in the front diff. From grounding this 2 wire connection at the diff. I don't know of a sensor on the t-case yet but I believe u there is one so what is it called and what does it do? Where exactly is it located? Thanks

oh, u are looking at the sensor that tells the light to go on when in 4wd. u need to go back by the transfer case, there is a sensor on there that is also a 2 wire set up, u need to put it in 4wd and see if u have continuity threw it in 4wd, if not then it needs to be replaced, when u ground out the one on the front it tells it everything else had already switched into 4wd, but since it hasn't it then does switch it all over due to u grounding it out.

I think I understand. What is the sensor on the t- case called and what's it look like? So I should have power through it when I switch to 4wd?

its called a transfer indicator switch, and yes with it in 4wd it should have power going threw it, below is a diagram, looks like it should be on the drivers side.

Well it was a broken wire back by the transfer switch. Also there is the transfer switch on the transfer case and another sensor on the transmission all the way up by the shifter toward the top of the tranny. Both are on the passenger side and the broken wire was between these two switches.
