I managed to find myself a donor 22re to rebuild for my '93 4runner! I'm heading up tomorrow morning to pull it and take it home.

The guy I'm getting it from is mechanic, so I'm not too worried about getting it out, but I'm going to be putting it in the back of my 4runner. My thought is to just lay down a heavy moving blanket in the back, toss the engine on top, and strap it down. If it's too hard to get it in there, I'm thinking I'll pull the head and put it in separate... hopefully less manhandling that way. I'm going to be disassembling it, so there's no problem with the engine being on it's side or anything, right?

I've never done anything like this and just want to be prepared so I don't look like an idiot!

pull the head if you can,set the block in an old tire,strap it down and you should be good!

What if you borrowed a friend's pickup or trailer for a day? I could name half a dozen people I know who would do that for me. Would be much easier in my opinion since you could just place in the bed/trailer, strap down and forget it. I see people do that all the time around here. You run the risk of oil or other fluids leaking all over your carpet, unless you don't mind those sorts of things.

My first thought was to borrow a truck but I just moved up here, so I don't know many people in town. I looked into renting one, but that would get pretty expensive because they charge by the mile and it'd be putting 250-300 on it =)

I'd obviously prefer not to get crap all over the interior.. that's why I was thinking a heavy quilt and maybe a tarp under that. Oil on the carpet really isn't a big deal, it's pretty trashed already.

I second the motion to use an old tire. That's how I transported a 22RE in the back of my first gen. With the help of 2 ratchet straps it worked perfect. You can see it's really not too tall so you shouldn't have to pull the head. We lifted it into the Runner with the same crane he used to lift it out of his Pickup.

Also, I should add, make sure you leave it vertical, especially if you do pull the head. It doesn't matter how well you think you've drained the fluids, it will leak and make a mess of the inside of your Runner.

I would not want to put a engine in a 4Runner but sometimes one has to do these things.

I hope you have a engine crane to get it out.

Ratchet straps and no panic stops you really don`t want it going past you and hitting the dash.

Well, pulling the engine and getting it in the 4runner was a success! We put a tire on a tarp on the tailgate. We then lowered the engine onto it straight down (we were using a bulldozer) and then just pushed the tire+engine in. The tarp let it slide easily enough into the truck and then we tied it down with a couple straps. It felt surprisingly sturdy... drove 100 miles home and it didn't budge the whole way.

Now I just have to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with this thing. It has 275k miles on it (more miles than I thought)... it *should* still have a lot of life left in it after a visit to the machine shop, right? I don't think it's been machined before, overheated, etc. The engine in my truck currently has 175k, I'd much rather rebuild that but this one is already out... =)

Anyway, enough thinking out loud, I got it home!

Nice...its really not as heavy as you think it would be,me and another guy picked mine up and put it in the back of my truck,without the head on.ps.harbor freight has engine stands on sale for $46.00!

Ha! This reminds me of the time I saw two guys in a pickup who had a V8 in the back. We were at a 4 way stop and they took off like a bat out of .... anyway, turns out they didn't have the engine strapped down and I watched it roll out the back of the truck and fall on the street. Right in the middle of the intersection. I'll never forget the looks on those yahoos faces when they got out to take a look.
