Transmission swap problems 1990 4runner auto to mannual

I have a 1990 runner 3.0. I took out the auto and put in a five speed and now my tach and water temp gauge do not work.

It might be unrelated, but I'm wondering if I need to change the ECU as well. At the moment I have the neutral switch bypassed to start .

I have not driven it yet. It starts and runs, but the RPM's are a little high.

Anyone ever have any of these issues with a swap?

Edit: Mods, if this is better suited in another forum please move. Thanks

Correct me if im wrong but the ECU's are auto/manual specific. So if it doesnt "feel" readings from the auto feeding back to it (since obviously it doesnt now) it might throw things out of wack .. our auto's are electronically controlled also so the ECU is normally in charge of keeping track of its functions.

Yep. You need a manual ecu.

Don't know if it's different for an 89, but I DIDN'T need a ecu from a manual for my swap, it worked just fine.

Although when my truck took a swim and fried the ECU I put in a spare from a manual and it also worked just the same...

And obviously this is not my opinion but the actual result from my own swap.

It's not different for any year vs. another, it's exactly the same for all.

Tachometer signal is IG-, which originates at the ignitor.

Water temp gauge signal originates at the Engine Coolant Temperature Sender.

It's not possible for those to be affected by changing the transmission from an auto to a manual(or vice versa). As neither have anything to do with the transmission. And the tachometer(IG-) and water temperature guage signals don't even go to, or come from the the ECU at all. IG- runs directly from the ignitor to the tachometer. The ECT sender signal runs directly from it to the water temp gauge. The only thing that could possibly come up from using an automatic transmission ECU with a manual transmission would be a buttload of automatic transmission codes. You should be getting all of them, except 42(no.1 VSS). There are no transmission codes for a manual transmission.

I didn't have any problems with my swap with the exception of all the auto wires I had to remove..

I did it on the same 1990 3.0 4runner like yours except mine is a 2door

ECM isnt going to change your issues but if it is not getting a coolant reading that could cause some issues but I believe that there are separate sensors for the gauge vs the info for the ECM.
