Transmission Problem

I have a 90 4Runner w/3.0L that has a strange problem. Sometimes I can put the trans. in drive & accelerate with no problems, I can then park the thing, turn it off & come back 30 minutes later & it will not move in any gear. Come back 15 minutes later & drive off. The last time it happened I put the transfer case in 4L and had no problem accelerating (wouldn't move in 2H or 4H). I drove it around a little in 4L (hubs unlocked), parked it & waited about 10 minutes, started it up & had no problems in 2H. It doesn't slip when it runs in drive, it either goes into gear or doesn't, no inbetween. It seems to be getting more frequent. Can the solenoids cause this? Also, it doesn't want to go into O/D all the time & shift points vary. Any help is greatly appreciated.

if you have no drive in any gear, even sometimes, your torque converter is (on its way) out.

I was going to say maybe the solenoids are sticking or clogged, but I'm no expert.
