transmission noise: 87 22re 5 speed
i have a 1987 4x4 pickup 22r 5 speed, all of a sudden the other day it started making a kind of rattling grinding noise in every gear except 4th. it makes no noise at idle or in 4th and it gets louder as i go faster.
i dont know much about transmissions so any ideas would be appreciated this is my brothers truck and i need to fix it because it started doing it while i drove it

based on the description, it aint sounding good...
got a neutral on your transfer case? (you do, even if you don't have the detent for it) It's between the 4H and 4L. Directly in the middle.
Put the TC in "N" and repeat testing process. Come back and tell me/ us what happens.
hey wait... 4th is a 1:1 so that makes me think input or output shaft bearing...(for some reason)

i already did the neutral thing it doesnt make any noises, my buddy said something about the 4th gear being 1:1 but i never really messed with transmissions before so i dont know much about how they work, are the input and output shaft bearings hard to replace?

Sorry, I don't have any ideas for your noise problem.
However, you said you need to fix it because it happened when you were driving it. Whatever happened to it, I doubt it was really your fault. More than likely, something was about ready to go anyway, you just happened to be the one driving it when it went. Unless you were jamming it into wrong gears, and stuff like that.

Mine does the same thing. I have been searching the internet for a fix or what the problem is. I found this... but still haven't checked it out on mine.
