Transmission Fluid/ Filter Change

Transmission Fluid/ Filter Change
Been searching for some help with my 93 4runner V6 4wd auto. Went on a trip and the next morning trans started slipping severely. Had truck towed home on a flatbed. upon delivery truck grabbed gears for a few seconds then resumed slipping. I dropped trans pan to replace filter and apx 10 quarts fluid come out. all the threads I've seen say there should only be three or four quarts present. Anyone have any thoughts? By slipping I mean will not budge at all. Thanks for any help!!!!

drain and refill: 4.5USqts
total: 10.3USqts
Thanks to your careful measurement, my guess is you have a leak in the torque converter. As much as I prefer to do my own work, I think I'd defer to a real Transmission shop for that.

Thanks for the response. I am new to the transmission arena. Is that a common problem to have the torque converter leak? I am afraid I will be doing this repair myself and I just want to approach this with my guns loaded so to speak..

Not that common.
If you can remove your transmission you can replace the torque converter.
Remove transmission.
Slide the converter out of the trans.
Slide new converter in [make sure it goes all the way in, you may have to play with it].
Reinstall trans.

If on a tight budget. what steps would you take/recommend? It was the large amount of fluid that drained from the pan that has thrown my reasoning out. I drained almost 10 quarts. I have driven only a couple of miles since it started slipping and had it towed home. Could it be the pump? Once again thanks!!

It looks like the entire capacity of the trans is only 10.3 quarts, meaning the entire content of fluid resided in the pan. Had fluid levels checked recently so overfill is unlikely. Thanks
