Transfer case Help

I have a 94 dxl 5spd 4x4 I went out behind the house the other day to try the 4x4 out and only have rear wheels spinning so i thought the hubs may be messed up...I still have low gear and high gear but the front wheels will not spin

I pulled it into the garage jacked it up and here is what i found
if i lock the front hubs in and have the transfer case in 4 Low and spin the front tires the axles and front shaft will turn....but if i spin the rear tire only the rear shaft turns...when i unlock the front hubs the front spin free like they should

I have no noise coming from the transfer case and no front end noise
just wondering if any one has had this issue or may be able to tell me where to start so i can get this fixed....also would it be better to rebuild the transfer case if needed or buy another one

Thanks for your advice and any info

Does the shifter feel normal? Sounds like it isn't moving the shift rail into 4wd.

There is one rail for 2-4 and one for hi lo. Has it ever been apart?

If case is stock there should be an interlock pin between the shift rails. Sometimes it gets lost and the stock single shifter can come out of the notch on the shift rail and it wont move it. The shifter flops around funny though.

If the shift rails are moving something is wrong internally. The roll pin may have fallen out of the shift fork or something broke.

Drain the oil and see if any metal is present in oil. You'd think you would have some noise if major internal damage.

You can also remove the shifter and move the rails with a screw driver to see.

I just re read your post about spinning the front and rear wheels. Did you try to turn the drive shaft with it up on stands?

If you have it in 4wd and up on stands, if you grab and rotate the drive shaft, both the front and rear should turn.

If they don't, the 4wd shift collar may not be moving to engage 4wd. Or something is broke inside.

I'm also assuming 4cy gear drive t-case. If it's a V6 chain type case I'm giving you bad info.

big blue pile the only reason i re posted this in this forum is because I posted in the wrong one and didn't know if anyone would reply out of the other forum and I don't know how to delete a post

AZtoyman I did turn the drive shafts while it was up in the air and only one would turn at a time while engaged in 4wd

No worries, you can send a message to a moderator to delete or merge responses into a single thread. I was simply trying to make sure others would see that and post into the OTHER thread.
