tranny install problem! Need lots of help!

I have a 86 4runner that was having engine problems, no power, trouble starting. Today i replaced the 22re with another 22re and took the tranny out and attemped to replace it.jacked up the tranny but I couldnt get the spline to line up right. It was almost in but it gets stuck two inches away from being married to the engine. What gives? Truck is 86 runner, engine off a 88 long bed. Tranny and clutch off 82 short bed. Throw it at me, what am I doing wrong? Let me know, I miss driving my rig!

Did you use an alignment tool to center the friction disc on the flywheel?

Yea sure did. Swapped in a tranny from the 88 to the 82 with no problems except for cutting the tranny tunnel. But the tranny from the 82 to the 86 isnt working right

Did you swap the clutch disk??? I bet dollars to donuts the spline count is different. Because thats the spline length about two inches.

When I do a clutch I use a light grease on the splines and lock the trans in gear so I can twist the shaft from the back with my finger or a homemade tool.

The clutch is the original one off the 82, so I guess I didnt. We tried it in gear and in neutral, they both seemed to have the same effect

If the 82 transmission is a stock L52 you are gonna run into an issue with it being shorter (4.5" or so) than your W56. Drive shaft length and crossmember mounting location is gonna be off.

what might be happening is 2 things, the splines on the clutch and the ones on the shaft are not lined up so put it in 1st and turn the rear of the output shaft tell they line up 2nd thing is sometimes the motor will lean forward or reverse and not line up that way too so when u are trying to put it in they are going in at different angles. one of these is probable your issue.

Yea I noticed the engine leaned towards the back. My bud that was helpin me didnt believe it was a big issue. I tried jacking the engine but it didnt do much, motor mounts are tightened up already. The tranny might sit lower but extensions could fix the shifter problem. We put the 88 w56 tranny in a 82 with no issues except for cutting the tranny tunnel thats about it.
