first off..there aint nothin wrong with dodge...as far as i know..lol..at least not with the 24V diesels..lol..we had an '02 quad cab short bed 4x4 with the cummins 24V diesel..i personally put over 30,000 miles on it..(in quite a short amount of time)..i took it through some mud..relined it a few times..raced it a bit..i was doin burnouts constantly..and never had not ONE problem with it..well..had to replace the ujoints in the front driveshaft..and the double cardan joint too..but thats regular maintenance..never burned a drop of oil..was very quiet..(like..abnormal noises..cummins diesels are LOUD)..my dad made a few 1000 mile trips in it..it was a great truck...parts are HIGH DOLLAR...but dont go around saying DODGE SUCKS..cuz it dont..maybe a few models do...but the diesel 4x4 we had was 100000 times better than this old toyota..in every way..had more power..got close to the same gas mileage..never had any parts to fix..was roomier..in LOADS better shape..lol..of course i do LOVE MY TOYOTA TO DEATH!!!!
Dodge still sucks...Cummins sells engines to Dodge. If Cummins put there engine in a Chevy...I would buy that. If Cummins put their engine in a Ford...I would buy that. It just so happens that Dodge carries the Cummins.

There's a line by a the head guy with Chrysler (I think) that went something like "out of ten of our vehicles is as good any anything the Japanese ever made, 3 are comparable in quality to the average Japanese car"...and so on.
I'd rather KNOW its good quality than play a game of Russian Roulette with my vehicle choice. I do a lot of trips alone (I go fishing on my own) and I don't want something that is "kind of reliable".

those nissan pickups body style definitely went to crap when they got rid of the 720 body style with the exterior bedrail/hooks (which I wish my toyota came with stock - you lucky pre 84 and hilux guys).
but seriously, like space-junk said, we are TOYOTA guys and you should be convincing your buddy to instead just get himself a badass LT kit and an e-locker if he doesn't already have it.
OR...if it were me and if i had the space, i'd keep the prerunner as a DD and go buy a $1k yota that runs and drives as a project.

DUDE ^^ The truck in question is a 96 Nissan 4x4. I had one. Piece of crap, I hated it, nothing ever worked. No one mentioned anything about xterras, and that would probably fall apart on the trail anyway and she knows it, thats why its the highway queen.
Nothing against the newer ones, they seemed to have figured it out a bit past 97-98. Their interior will always be cheap S plastic crap, but what does that matter.

Before owning my current pickup I owned a 2000 frontier with the 3.3 and 60K and all I know is it was the biggest money pit I've ever owned needless to say I waited and bought a 06 Frontier with the 4.0 and I don't care what anyone says those new Frontiers haul ass and are built strong. For the year I had that thing I drove it hard off road and on and never a lick of trouble but due to buying a house and getting married the $300 + payment had to go and now I have my Yota which I love but just thought I'd give my opinion the old ones def suck

I have read good things about Frontiers, father n law has a 2001 now with 180k and runs like a champ, not a one problem. Changed timing belt @ 110k, three sets of pads up front and oil changes. Thats it.

I don't know what you guys are whining about, My 95 Nissan 4x4 was RELIABLE and unstoppable and far more DEPENDABLE than my yota. You never hear about guys on the nissan forum blowing headgaskets like you do here. I had an Infiniti G20, again, FANTASTIC car, I owned a Mercury Villager (Nissan Qust) and it was a GREAT van. So that's triple the experience that most of you had with Nissan products. They are every bit as good as Toyota truck, and honestly it is a matter of style between the two. The thing Toyota punches Nissan on the nose is Customer Service at the Dealerships. Nissan still doesn't have a phawking clue. So much so that I will stay with Toyota because the service department is so much better and that fact that I really like my toyota truck.

3rd try to point this out, 96 NISSAN 4X4 is truck in question. 1st year OBD 2. Nissan blew it. This truck sucks. Not ever going to argue they have some decent cars and technology
