torque converter? tranny?
Hi. Newbie here who just became the owner of a 94 pickup with the 22re and auto. Bought the truck for dirt cheap with seized motor. Bought used motor and me and a friend of mine removed old motor with tranny still attached. Attached good motor to tranny with converter not seated properly, but did finally seat it correctly after some investigating. Added 7 quarts of atf to the empty tranny and the engine dies when I put it in gear. Did I not seat the converter correctly or did I mess it up. Is there any way I can try to reseat it? Is the tranny shot? It never heated the atf. I can see the driveshaft want to turn when in gear but it dies instantly. Forgot to mention that I didn't fill the converter with atf before I installed it...would that cause problems? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

To tell you the truth, no I didn't know if the tranny was working. I assumed it did because my friends dad owned it and said it was the head gasket. After further investigation I found the timing chain cover in oil pan and nothing but tap water in the radiator. First thing I did was drain all fluids out and the atf was black at first, then dark red at the end.

If the engine dies when you put it in gear, I'm guessing the input shaft (connected to the inside of the torque converter) does NOT want to turn. Checking to see if the drive shaft will turn is easy and will tell you if the whole transmission is frozen solid (so yes, you should do that). But the driveshaft can be turned even if the torque converter is installed incorrectly so that the engine cannot turn the input shaft.
