Timing cover too tall

I am just about to finish with a HG and TC replacement. I purchased a used timing cover that was supposed to go on my 94 truck. When I went to install it it was about a 1/4 in taller than mine. My issue is that the person that sold it to me claimed it to be for the 85-95 truck. When I contacted him he told me he was told by someone that it should have fit unless it was a car engine.

From the little I have found on the net it appears that the earlier 20/22r had a slightly taller cover that was used. Can anyone point me in the right direction for something solid that I can link back to this guy. I just want to recover the cash I spent on this cover.

It has nothing to do with car Vs Truck engines. It is 84-older vs. 85-newer. You have the 85+ engine, and they sold you an 84-older timing cover. It simply will not work.

Timing covers for the 84-older engines are 11 1/4" tall

Timing covers for the 85-newer engines are 11 1/16" tall

Show them the measurements, and you can also take a pic of your old cover showing the difference.

From- http://www.lcengineering.com/technot...&catid=1&id=49
1975 - 1980 20R Block
Deck Height 11.280"
...
1981 - 1984 22R Block
Deck Height 11.280"
...
1985 - 1995 22R-22RE "Laser Block"
Deck Height 11.090"
Also mentioned here: http://www.3rz.net/TechNotes/TechNote48.htm

As you can see, the deck height is shorter on the 85-95 engine blocks and the deck height just happens to coincide with the size of the timing cover.
