I have had this noise since I bought the truck 2 years ago. Just recently it has gotten worse. It used to be my sign that i was low on oil, it would get worse but when I'd add a half a quart, it would go away. Now it's the constant grind, so I think it's time to tear in to it. Is it better to go to Toyota for these parts, or a place like lcengineering.com? I have never done one of these, so this will be an "experience" to say the least. ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Parts go to EPN also known as engnbldr on ebay for the parts, I found it cheaper through his web site than ebay.

You can pull the valve cover gasket and make sure the drivers side guide is broken, if it is it is time.

Nope, fit and finish were great. The tensioner is OEM manufacturer, everything seemed to be better quality than the average parts store parts. But the price is much cheaper.

Chain replaced. water and oil pumps also. I'm AMAZED at how simple it was.... I just followed the instructions here:

Hi Woody, I also just did that same repair using the engnbldr front end kit ($149) and the same instructions as you. Time consuming, but not difficult.

I just read another thread and realized that I didnt use any sealant on the timing cover gasket; everything I used seemed to fit well and snug and I havent noticed any leaks yet; hopefully I wont need to tear it apart and put a new gasket in with sealant. Did you use sealant around that gasket?

I didnt use any, just on the corners on top and along the oil pan on the bottom......

I've always used sealant on every inch of the timing cover. If not then I almost grant you it will leak. Or mine always did.
