Timing Belt Marks and TDC...
So I'm installing a new long block 3VZE into my 90 4Runner right now...
The FSM, and all the postings I've searched/read say TDC is when you align the mark on the timing belt gear on the crank straight up with the oil pump mark... Correct?
Like this --->
Then I align both cam marks with their marks on the metal backing, all the slack is at the tensioner.
I rotated the motor several dozen times (no joke) and the marks all seem to stay lined up... after 20+ times around, the cam gears always stop on their marks together and the crank is "straight up" when the cam marks are "straight up"
Those damn marks on the timing belt threw me off... I was putting the belt on, and lineing them up... rotate the motor over a few turns... and they were off...
So i came to the (conclusion after reading here) that those marks are just to get you started, and not to be followed past that.
Did i do it right? I really dont want to take it all apart again...

great thanks,
And if the timing marks are all lined up with the marks on the motor, I can install the distributor so it's pointing at #1 on the cap correct?

Line up the crank and cam marks and you will be at TDC of the compression stroke, which is necessary before distributor installation. The FSM has a good description of the installation process in the IG section. Here is a picture of the rotor when the distributor is installed properly: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116.../#post51273447
