Time to rebuild the motor

I was coming home from work Friday. I went from 2nd to 3rd, heard a clatter, then heard some rpm consistent valve tapping, a minor loss in performance, and my shifter started to shake.

I assumed a valve stuck, got hit, bent and that would explain the loss in power (valve sticking open) the unbalanced motor, and the valve tap.

I pulled the head today and found some mechanical damage inside #2 as well as some scoring up the passenger's side of #2. My best guess is a ring came apart.

All of this after just rolling over 200k.

I plan to pull the block Tuesday and take it to the machine shop for analysis. I'm planning an oversized stock rebuild if I can get away with it. I'm going to try to remember to take pictures along the way this time. Bear with me I'm going to be asking several questions along the way too.

Hope you're ok with a bore and hone and 20over set... Don't skimp on quality bearings and rings

Gonna grab a performance head or just rebuilt/beef up?

I have a relatively new head from engnbldr. The original cracked between the valves on #3 in '06. So as long as the machine shop doesn't tell it's fubar'd I'm going to get it decked and throw it back on.

Looking at his price list, I think I can get parts under about $400. That would include a set of pistons, rings, bearings, and gaskets. Throw in a new oil and water pump and I should be good for another 200k.

Plus I think if I deck the head, go oversized pistons to account for the bore and hone, and rebalance my injectors I should see a little bump in performance.

Not sure on the 'performance' add from larger pistons... I have to reread up on that one, but I seem to remember that on these motors, increasing the bore actually lowers compression, if that's what you're going for. Anyway, not nay saying your plans, lol... Just throwing it out there for fodder/discussion

Sounds good, best wishes, man!

Wouldn't a .020 over piston have a slightly larger dome to retain the stock compression ratio.

I dropped my head off the machine shop where Dave, one of the best machinists I've seen, will strip the head, tank it, check to make sure it is hopefully salvagable, and then deck it to take out any imperfections.

I also boxed up and shipped my injectors and cold start injector to Witch Hunters and hope to get them back next week. After 200k miles and several disassemblies the caps were cracked and missing and pretty much worse for the wear. We'll see what they have to say.

Hey Shakes,.... I thought that the smaller holes in the 22RE made for HIGHER compression, ...and when you bore it out, it lowers it, but yes, far as I know, you can INCREASE it again, up to 185+# per hole by using dome type pistons. With the proper head work and such, you can get right back to 'stock compression' with these.. But most shops that just do a basic rebuild don't bother to go that far. They usually just do it to specs and lap the valves properly, replace the exhaust ones, etc., etc. BUT DAVE, Fiero's 'BEST MACHINIST HE'S EVER SEEN' guy.... I'm sure he knows all that stuff and will build it according to what Fiero wants

Depends on the motor... I think 22RTE had 'lower' compression for obvious reasons... But the stock Compression on the 22re was like .........180# RIGHT off the floor? Mine is bored 20over(.050") and it's pushing 175# per hole, average, with 12K miles. Mang. Bronze Guides, 1mm Oversized Valves, Dual Row Eski' Springs, Viton Seals, New Adjusters and nuts, slightly worked oiling ports on the rocker shafts, 261 Engnbldr CAM balanced by Engle Bros. Cam's here in town...... It does fine.... 90-93MPH last GPS test flight on 31x10.50's, haha.... But EQUALLY important, in my book? GEARS! hahaha.

I'm still kinda learning about this stuff... even though I helped build and machine my own motor this time..... I can only store so much info in my tired brain any longer! hahaha.

I just got off the phone with the machine shop. #2 needs to be sleeved, the rest will be bored .030 over, the crank is getting cleaned up to .010 under, then the block, heads, and timing cover are getting decked true.

Now I have to wait another hour until engnbldr opens up and I can place my order for a master rebuild kit, water pump, head bolts, and oversized valves.

The wait is killing me.

Witchhunter sent a package that vaguely smells of gasoline, horsepower, and dreams!!!

Tomorrow should be the GIANT Box From Ted, which will immediately followed by a trip to the machine shop. Hopefully Monday, I''l be able to pick up a complete rotating assembly.
