tie rod problems

tie rod problems

i have a 95 truck need to replace all my tie rods. removed pin and nuts on each tie rod i tried useing fork tool to remove them and was not able to move them at all. so i went out and bought an air hammer and tryed that. i all so tried puting a jack on the stud of tie rod putting the weight of the truck on it and the useing the air hammer and it stiil will not break free.please some one have any ideas on how to get theses tie rods off?

Pitman arm puller and impact gun. Spray it down with some PB Blaster the night before.

Harbor Freight sells various tie rod tools. They are not much money.

Kragen rents tools, they may have one you can rent.

I have never found the fork to be worth a damn compared to the dedicated tie rod end/ball joint tools.

Buy a tie rod end puller. Bout $25 or so at harbor freight.

I got one, I have used it so many times. Makes those things a breeze. Tighten till its super tight then giver a whack with the hammer.

That's what mine looks like, but the package says "piman arm tool".

i just did mine the other day..had no probs getting it out just hit the stud with a BFH a couple times and out she came, the real fun is trying to get them out of the adjuster deal....thought i was gonna keil over...also did you go with the ebay tie rods?? i have a slight issue with mine wonderin if you have the same?...

I have one like that, and then a biger longer one with a pivot at the end. So you can put it as wide as you need it.

Best $30 I ever spent! A few of my friends who claim to never need such a thing have borrowed it a few times

Doesn't that figure. I have friends like that too. Maybe we have the same friends? They get all macho, you don't need that, just do this. But, then, when they go to do it, guess what they are borrowing?

I just used the forks, and a 5lb sledge hammer. No problems, never had to have anything else for tie rod ends. Pitman arms on the other hand, I have a puller, they can be tight as heck.

On our Toyotas, they're all the same size, so why not use the pitman arm puller anyways? Much safer and better for the truck, especially if you need to reuse that TRE because the puller won't tear the boot like the pickle fork likely will

just whent to harbor freight and the didnt have a tie rod end puller but the had a front end service set so i got that cost me $100 but well worth it. it has five different puller i'll find one that will work. and i didnt get my tie rods from e-bay baught moog brand tie rod ends,i baught moog brand pitman arm and idler arm so i whent with the same brand for my tie rods.going to work on my truck now so i will let you know if i have any probems with the adjusters later.

sweet. 100 bucks is kinda steep but i guess you can use them for all sorts of things, i was just woundering about the ebay tie rods cuz it seems that my outer tie rod is shorter than the new one, wouldent make that much of a difference but their touching inside the sleeve

just finished had no problem with useing puller thanks.have another problem test drove truck it drives fine until i get to 40 the steering wheel shakes even worse but it stops at 50. is this my tires or ball joints

I could not find my puller intill it got uncovered after I had already replaced the TRE's.

tires, there prolly chopped really bad from the mis alignment try rotating your tires, and you should prolly get an alignment too

If I had to guess, it'd be a caster problem.
Various vehicles are infamous for a "death wobble" but it's over-rated. Just a point where the suspension is in a state where it doesn't really know which way to go and you get a wobble.
Go get it aligned.
