Tach Help
Hey guy's! I recently put a SR5 instrument panel in my truck and everything works fine. The question I have is the RPM's. Can somebody that has a tach let me know how many RPM's I should be running in 1st at 15 mph, 2nd - 25, 3rd - 35, etc. My tach only reads about 1700 rpms in 5th going 55 mph, and does not go above 2000(unless I try) while normally shifting through gears. At idle, it sits at 750 like it should. It just strikes me as odd that the RPM's are not higher when going down the road and shifting through the gears. My truck is a 22re, 5-speed,W56 tranny with 30x9.50 tires. Thanks for the help in advance.

Will the tach go to 3 or 4K? The 1,700 RPMs at 55 MPH in OD sounds about right.
If the tach shows a full range of RPMs, then it apparently is working correctly. From the sounds of it, I would shift a little bit later, and see if that cures your 'problem'.

Thanks for the reply. If I rev the engine when not in gear, it will get up to 3k-4k, but it is screaming. I'm not sure if that's the way these 22re are supposed to sound when the rpm's get above 3k or not? I can pull to around 2300-2400 in 3rd gear up to 45mph. Are these engines pretty good at handling high rpm's? I guess I have really never got on the gas before and not having a tach prior to this, it is all new to me. I guess everything is good from what you are saying. I appreciate your help.

RPM on my '85/22RE is around 2800-3000 @ 65 in 5th gear, sounds like you might have a V6 cluster/tach in there:

You can calculate what RPM should be in a given gear:

What's the easiest way to adjust? I searched for a thread and found one on ToyotaNation that shows how to do it. Is it really as easy as rogerman says who posted the thread? My idle sounds like where it should be and reads 750rpm on the tach, but if it is a tach for a 6 cyl., does that mean I am actually idling at 1500rpms +/- 200rpms? It mentions removing the speedometer to access the screw to adjust the tach and plug the instrument panel back in, but will it mess anything up running it without the speedometer installed?

Good info gents!! I need to find an extra tach that I can use to get this straightened out. I am going to adjust it as in the first link above and what I mentioned about the TN thread. Thanks again gentleman and I will let you know how everything turns out.
