Swap advice needed
Hi all,
So, I've got a '93 pickup with inoperable cancer, but the old girl checked YES on the organ donor card. She had a solid motor and a good trans/tcase/driveline. A solid '89 4Runner with an auto and a spun bearing has found its way into my life. Both were 22RE's.
I did a fair bit of reading and caught a couple of the hiccups before they became issues, but need a bit of advice on the big one.
I was an idiot and didn't look at the wiring harness connectors while we had everything apart. I had planned to use the engine harness and ECU out of the truck, but as most of you will probably know, the old body harness won't play nice with the newer engine harness.
My question is this: Would you pull sensors and controls from the new motor and swap in the '89 harness/sensors/auto ECU, or would you cut the body harness connectors and spend some quality time with the wiring diagram to put the newer connectors in and run the '93 harness/sensors/5-speed ECU?
I've not done much with wiring, though it seems more time consuming than difficult. I am leaning towards '89-ifying the motor. I have a good idea what I'm getting into with swapping sensors and harness, and it doesn't seem as though manual trans with an auto ECU is a big problem.
Last question (sorry for the long post)... Friend of mine with an '89 truck wants the instrument cluster out of my '93 (it's got a tach and oil pressure gauge). I knew about needing a new oil pressure sensor, but he has a speedo cable and the one in the '93 has an electronic speedo. We haven't pulled his cluster yet to see if the other connectors match up. Can we pull speed sensor from mine and put it in his? Or is it a royal PITA to retrofit an electronic speedo? Both 22re, 5 speed.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Eric
