Hey All-

Went about 20 miles on the freeway yesterday, pulling my 6x12' trailer with about 1,800 lbs of tile and a washer and dryer. I estimate about 3,000 lbs in all. It did quite well! I won't be starting a towing service any time soon, but those 5.29's really showed themselves here! Kept my 65mph speed (w/out OD) on the inclines and all. Never broke a sweat on the temp gauge or the tranny temp gauge. Overall, really happy for a little 4 banger.

I'm largely ignorant about towing with my pickup, because I don't have a hitch. How much can a standard 22RE tow, in a pickup and/or a 4Runner? I've been trying to figure this out because I'd like to take my friend's small boat out sometimes, and it probably weighs 1,000lbs plus the trailer.

I've also got a rebuilt engine that was bored .30 over, a header, custom exhaust, and the PO mentioned it had a beefier cam but I don't know about those for 22REs.

I would think that even an original (probably tired) 22RE could pull that. If yours is in good shape, shouldn't be a problem, unless you have big tires and stock gearing. At that, you could just use a lower gear temporarily.

I had a very tired 84 22r, i mean tired, it was burning a quart each week from blow by. This was in an 84 4wd pickup with a shell and loaded with tools, welders, etc.

I bought a non running toyota tercel and pulled it from Snohomish to Yelm (total load including cargo in the bed was around 4000 lbs) it did very well.

In other words, your 22re should pull that boat just fine lol

Wow, that's like 100 miles! Very impressive for a 22R, especially a tired one. Did you ever get the Tercel running?

sounds like i underestimate my 22re. i have had 600lbs of house hold junk in my box to take to the dump and my yota hated it. my front end was up a bit and she didnt want to take hills at all ( sucks with no load on hills anyway lol ). i haven't pulled a trailer with her yet but im sure i don't want too lol it would be like 3rd gear, 3500rpm, foot to the floor for a slight incline haha. sometimes i realy want a 3.4L but because of the reliability and legendary 22re i cant.

those 31" Dick Cepek mud tires are probably what's making it hard to climb hills.

I towed my 1985 pickup home with my completely stock 4runner on 35's. It did well, obviously wasn't a speed demon, but the ol' 22RE pulled her the 50 km home without breaking a sweat or blowing anything up

o i know the 3.4 is realy good but the simplicity or the 22re and the fact my truck came with it makes me keep her. if i had a 3.0L in my truck stock i would swap it for a 3.4 without thinking twise lol. and pruney81 im sure it isnt my cepeks because i had 31" bfg a/t's before and it was about the same lol maybe if i were running a smaller tire like a 30's or 29's or something it would help?

gearing would be nice but i figure i wont re gear unless i go 33's or bigger. i just make due with my gutless 22re and shift down for hills lol, o and i took my hitch off so i dont try and tow anything haha. o and camo im not sure if you are talking about me but i rock a 5 speed, never would i own an automatic lol. hey limon i wish i could have a diesel omg i dream haha i love driving my dads 06 1 ton cummins it doesn't quit even with 2 quads, 2dirtbikes on a sled deck, box loaded, 5 people inside, and two jetskies on the trailer lol. 110 km/h, 2000rpm up hill, and doesn't skip a beat.

i agree...lol personally with my tire and gear combo i have right now, although it drives fine empty i wouldn't tow anything with it. when it had stock tires on it i did once tow an 20 foot car trailer with an datsun 280z on it, the truck hated it but it did it, towed it about 100 miles, down to second gear bump'n red-line up the cajon pass in cali kept up with the semi's though. i also blew out the break master cyl on this trip, the last few stops of the trip required to pump the breaks

my ford 7.3 powerstroke however would tow the Toyota the trailer and that car all on another trailer up the same pass and probably would never even have to downshift out of 5th, imo Toyota's aren't really made to tow, throw a half ton in the bed and your ok. occasional small trailers or small boat with a proper tire/gear ratio is fine but i wouldn't tow often with a Toyota.
