Sudden high load / low rpm 'clunk' / knock?
Hi all,
I've got a quick question that's not exactly 22RE / 3VZE specific, but, I've noticed it mainly on older vehicles where perhaps a few systems aren't running in tip top shape.
I've got an '86 22RE-powered 4Runner (auto). I never really noticed it before, but, I was always aware on most vehicles that if you went from a stop (no throttle) to full throttle extremely quickly (like less than a second), you would hear an audible 'clunk' or knock from the engine.
I assume this is preignition, and, while probably not terrible, probably isn't the best either. My truck runs perfectly and is in great shape otherwise -- this is just one of those nagging things.
I remember my granny had an old Tercel (again, automatic) that had the same symptoms, but, it was much worse -- if you suddenly gave it say, half throttle, it would have that same 'clunk' before taking off (mind you, her car was in much worse shape).
I'm not sure if I'm being clear enough on the symptoms, but, I'm pretty sure it's nothing dangerous. On my truck, the spark plugs, dist cap, rotor, and wires are still in good shape (about 20,000 miles on all), so I doubt it is ignition-related. If anyone has any ideas where I should poke around if I get ambitious, let me know. If anyone is simply of the opinion that this is normal and I should leave it be, that's also great advice!
Thanks guys.

Ive actually done that to with an autotragic, stopping while the trans is down shifting and then mash the gas.Transmission is reacting to sudden change in momentum and u hear a clunk.Thats what Ive experienced with older vehicles but not on newer ones.
