Stiff/Bound front end
I have a 1988 4runner, 22RE engine with manual locking hubs.
This typically only happens when I'm in 4WD, doesn't matter if it's high or low (i'm trying to remember if it's happened in 2WD, but I'm sure it gets in in 4).
But When I turn the wheel to the end range (or close to) of either left or right, it feels like the wheels are binding or not wanting to turn. I happens in forwards and reverse. Been happening ever since I got it last year.
ideas?
Cheers

CV joint(s) are bad most likely. But they will want to, for the lack of a better term "hop" at full lock even with good ones. Basically saying when in 4wd on an IFS suspension, your tuning radius is smaller when in 4wd.

happens on asphalt, concrete, dirt.
I will sometimes get a bang noise out of my passenger front tire area when I pull out of my parking space (hard left turn). Only happens when it's cold and I'm turning hard in one direction. Hope that helps.
I think a buddy mentioned CV joints a while back.

yup, that's normal for the most part, full lock and 4wd on high traction surfaces is not the best for CV"s.
Now that's not to say it's the lack of steering stoppers either. Which also wear out so the slightest little bump and it will creak and moan like you wouldn't believe.

scroll to about 5:07 and listen for a creak at 5:09ish, that's what bad steering stoppers sound like.

It's not recommended to use 4WD on high traction surfaces.
It causes the symptoms you describe and is hard on the drive train.
A SFA wouldn't be any better.

Thanks guys, I'll see what I can do. I try not to drive on high traction surfaces in 4wd, but pulling out of the parking garage into the snow kinda requires it.
I should rephrase on of the earlier quotes. That bang noise happens all the time, not just in 4wd. The binding sensation where the wheels feel like they don't want to turn, happens mainly in 4wd.

do you have your steering stops adjusted the same? one tire trying to turn while the other cant? sounds like grinding stops to me grease them or get new caps

It sounds like its probably your cv joints. Get under your vehicle, grab the cv axle, and try to move it back and forth and side to side. If it moves or you hear rattling, the cv joint is probably bad.

Take a big dallop of grease and put on the metal end of the steering stop where the black plastic cap has worn off, and it's won't pop or creak when turning full lock. Toyota also can get you the caps for, I think, $5/6ea. BTW, my t4r is stiff in 4wd on high traction surfaces, but buttery smooth in snow and mud

But before I solidify that, have to ask a question when you tested in 2wd were the hubs still locked? If they were then there still is a possibility that the CV's are bad. But if they were in the free position, there is no reason why the CV's would be turning to bind and make noises at all and would lean towards the lack of any of the 8 ???? steering stoppers. Or possibly ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm.

can also get the stops at the place this guy did. Good write up on the replacements too. Looks like 4 stops not the 8 I previously said. FYI, I got to replace mine as those things are quite annoying. lol.

Well also if he doesnt have manual locking hubs, ( I didn't on my 91 but I don't know about an 88) then its basically the same as having the hubs locked all the time. And the axle shafts will turn all the time. My cv joints were starting to go out making a little noise here and there. then I went wheeling and totally destroyed them. They made noise all the way home, which luckily wasn't too far. Hopefully for him its just the bumpstops.
