If it happens only when wheels are locked in either direction, It is most likely the rubber/plastic stops have worn and bare metal is grinding. No harm just sounds terrible.

X2, but does your truck have ADD or manual hubs? If ADD It could also be one or both CV axles as well.

From my build thread about stopping the creaking from full steering turning.

Yesterday I turned all 4 of the steering stops 180 degrees to use the bottom part not wore out and before I put the caps back on I sanded down the bolt under cap smooth and sanded the contact area smooth on the knuckles and greased the caps :}
Easy Peasy!!!!

The pic is from before I turned them 180 degrees, instead of the brown part being up where it's warn through put that area down and the clean black plastic area up and grease the surface, it's a very easy cheap fix.

If the steering stop cabs are cracked and won't stay on they'll have to be replaced, when removing them just go back and forth top and bottom then top then bottom prying to remove them carefully so not to brake them in two then you will have to get new ones...There only 5 bucks a piece at dealer...Here is a link to get aftermarket ones on ebay...
