steering gearbox leak

I have an '88 2wd pickup and the steering box leaks on the bottom. Options?
1. I would love to pick up a used one and just swap, but $ is tight and I don't know of any Orlando Florida junkyards. Anyone know any?
2. Replace seal. Can this be done while box is on truck? How hard?
3. Drain oil and replace with synthetic grease. Did a search online and some have done this and no leak and works good. Has anyone done this?

Thanks for any help.

Come on down to the 2wd subforum and post some shots of your truck!

There are several threads you can search for in this subforum on rebuilding the steering boxes and you can probably use those as a reference alongside the FSM starting at page 1075 if you don't have power steering or page 1109 if you do have power steering.

As for doing it on the truck, you might be able to do it, I think if you take off the pitman arm the seal is right there.

Thanks Magnusian. I posted two shots :-)

So, anyone use the synthetic grease???

I am trying some junk yards, but so far nothing.

I have read that in replacing the seal you could end up still having a link. Anyone expirence this?

Appreciate any information, thanks.
