Starting issues after alternator fire

Hey guys, I had a fire in my '86 22re 4runner on the back of my alternator (where the plug goes in) a couple weeks back. Finally found the time and money to put a new alternator and alternator wiring harness in after deciding the alt and/or internal voltage regulator was the problem.

Got it all put back together today, now it won't start. The wiring in the truck has been all hacked up by a PO, including a toggle switch wired to the starter. It always did start with the key, now it does nothing - but if I flip that toggle switch the PO put in, the engine turns over, but won't fire.

All the connections are tight on the alternator wiring, and I was looking around, in the fuse box in the engine bay there's that 80amp fuse/relay that's screwed in - I took the cover off and it looks blown. Is this probably my issue? What exactly is that, and can I get it at any old parts store?

I'm not good with auto electric, apologies if this is a stupid question.

Yes, you can get one at the local parts store. Remove yours first so you can see exactly what you need.

With an electrical fire, you're gonna want to double check everything. The fuse should be an easy replacement but I'd check every wire and fuse in that area. If there's any exposed wiring you might want to think about rewiring it, or at the very least putting heat shrink around it, otherwise you might short circuit and blow more fuses.

Agree with Gamefreakgc & rworegon

Cdsbigsby,
I suspect that the 80-Amp FL blew because of the same short circuit at alternator that caused the fire (main pulley could fling oil at the alternator making it more likely to catch fire).

After you replace the 80-Amp FL and before you reconnect to battery I suggest you make sure you have fixed the short circuit problem. With everything off, measure resistance from battery connector (not battery post) to body ground. There should be high resistance. I don't remember exactly how high that should be but you can search the forum. If you got a resistance value post it here, hopefully fellow members can comment, or I can check mine tomorrow.
