I've got a squeak that sounds like a driveshaft thing. sounds like a squeaky wheel in a cartoon. mainly when there's a little torque (like reverse up an incline). i'm guessing u joints, but, upon inspection i noticed some play at the transfer case connection. Is the fix just a matter of pulling the driveshaft and the back of the transfer case, then replacing a bushing or bearing?? oh yeah, it's the rear drive (2wd).

2wd's don't have a transfer case, Justin. That would be the transmission. Unless, you're referring to the carrier bearing?

You can see the differences. I know there is a bearing at the output shaft on the tranny, but beyond that I'm not qualified to tell you anything more. I've never repaired a 2wd tranny.

Um, it's got to be a 4x4 if it's a first gen 4runner, right? Other than that, I don't really understand the question. If it is something to do with the transfer case output, it would only do it in 4wd, right?

The "(2wd)" part has me thrown. I don't know if there are 2wd 1st gen's or not.

sorry about my description. the truck is 4wd. i meant to say that when i am driving without it being 4wd engaged (street, normal driving condition), the noise is happening. problem involves "rear" drive train. maybe i'm mistaken about what exactly the rear drive shaft connects to. anyway, i appreciate the replies and i'll try and get better about communicating. sometimes i have a difficult time translating a conversation into a computer.
