I ran into this problem in my 86. It was cured with a new EGR valve.

depends. some do, some don't. You might be able to find them used, but for me I usually can't find them in good shape used. If you can't find them new at the parts store, try toyotapartsales.com which sells OEM parts at actual discount prices

You may also have 1 or more injectors that have bad spray patterns. When cold, the ECU holds the injectors open longer to create the rich mixture a cold engine needs then shortens the injector pulse as the engine warms up. If (an) injector(s) are bad, as the engine warms and the pulse shortens, it could turn from an acceptible spray when cold to a stream when warm, causing an issue with proper combustion in the engine.
A dribbling cold start injector could also cause similar behavior as could valve adjustments, a failing coolant temp sensor or even a vacuum leak.
