Speedometer/odometer/sensor problems
Hi all, i've had this problem for a while, did a thread on it and also looked at other post on the subject but it seems like everyone has narrowed it down to other specific problems,it was the vss?,it was the cable,etc..my problem went from bad to worse..i have a 93 truck,4x4,3.0 auto,164,xxxmiles.
In the beginning my problem was, the speedometer wouldn't work in the mornings..afternoons was fine..(it displayed the correct miles per hour and the odometer worked, but the dial would fluxuate and drop at times..i've messed with the vss on the tail of the tranny and found it was letting oil seep into the sensor area (between the sensor and housing(i replaced the gear w/new one)...seems like at times it got a little better but then went back to being the same...now i've started looking at the cluster...i just checked for ohms (speedometrer) and it was good..(i have no speedometer cable all electric)....but now (the last couple of days)...my dial reads 15-18mph less than i'm actually driving which makes the odometer and tripometer read half of what i've actually driven..to replace the vss i've got prices from $327 @ toyota>$193 @ toyotapartszone..but the cluster is well over $300 @ toyota salvage yards are scarce here in (hawaii)...i did troubleshoot the vss by giving 12v power to it and checking it with a voltmeter..it says i need 0v-11v and then i spun the gear and the voltage fluxuated but not going passed 11.15v..which is acceptable..sure wish i could narrow this sucker down..is it the vss or cluster..we're talkin some big bucks here for either...why change something that wasn't broken..if toyota stuck with ol'faithful (the speedometer cable) ...i'd be done by now...thanks...SORRY TO KEEP BEAT'IN THIS DEAD HORSE

If its not the speed sensor, check your tranny fluid. When mine is low, my speedo needle jumps all over the place, add some juice, and shes good to go. Might not solve your problem, but it takes 2 sec to check, and if ur low, u need fluid anyway.
