Speedometer/Odometer

Hey guys,

Bought my first 4runner. It's a 92 3.0 automatic. I bought it with the speedometer and odometer not working, figured it wouldn't be a hard fix. Now I'm coming to you for some expertise.

I've done some research, although it seems it's hard to find viable information. I have removed and inspected the speed sensor at the xfer case, even bought one from a junk yard just to try. So far I've had no luck getting it to work. How do you troubleshoot these as it is a 3pin connection? Not sure the correct steps to take. Thanks guys.

I assume you have the electronic VSS1.

I have attached a drawing of the connector. The component is an IC with an integrated hall-effect sensor. You need 12v and gnd to power the IC, and the signal is 0 or 12v.

Since you've taken a chance on a junk unit, the first thing to do is to test it. Battery voltage can power it, and a multimeter can pick up the signal. The hard part is connecting to the pins of the connector, but it can be done.

On mine, I tested in the opposite direction, but you'll need a signal generator to do that.

Someone on this site reported finding the component filled with oil (bad o-ring). He cleaned out the oil, and the component started working again. I suppose it's possible ...
