Speedometer drops and loses power???

Hey,

i'm looking at getting another 4 runner, to turn into more of a toy car than my current one, as well as to get some body parts off of it to fix the damage my wife caused.

anyways, i just called someone regarding their 4runner, she says it will need a new steering pump, and the speedometer needle is doing wierd things.

she described it as the needle would drop to 0 if she went over a bump and the truck would lose power... then it would go back to normal... can anyone think of what this might be... if its not too much to fix it i will get the truck with the insurance money and sell off my blazer...

thanks in advance for your help.

I believe that model ('93, v6) has the electronic speedometer (no cable). When the sensor (VSS1) is going bad, it will cause the speedometer to drop for a second (or 2 or 20) and then spring back up. On mine, it did not cause a perceptible loss of power, but the VSS1 signal is used elsewhere in the ECU as well, so I can't rule that out.

"Bump" might mean loose connector. Or you could have a slowly deteriorating sensor. Which is around $350 for the part.

the harness might be shorting out against something just follow the wires to the speed sensor and check for rubbing or bare wires.

So i went by last night... another guy couldn't make it to look at it... poor him. and i grabbed it. now i just have to wait for the insurance claim to come through on my other runner and i'll have 2.. no more chevy for me.

anyways, for 2000, the steering pump whines... and the speedo is messed up... the rest of her is wonderful. barely any rust. the underside looks great and clean... driven by 2 older ladies since it was bought...

i think i got a great deal.. hopefully it doesn't die on me.
