Speedometer cable wont connect to instrument cluster

Help! I took my 1987 toyota 4wd pickup to have the odometer/speedometer fixed and the mechanic said the cable isnt plugged in because it doesnt fit. He said the cable looked original, and the cluster looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261040202335?item=261040202335&viewitem=&vxp=mtr. Any thoughts? I may need to tear it open myself to see the problem. Mahalo!

It takes some doing, but it fits. There is a notch that needs to be lined up for it to fit properly.

All toyotas that use a spedo cable work with any type of cluster...meaning they are not year specific.

The cable on my 91 snapped so when I went to the yard to find another I had one heck of a time. The reason is because of the back of the tach, some have a yellowish adapter and some don't. I had to take the adapter off of another tach so the cable would work with my tach. Did any of that make sense? In the picture here, some have these and some don't.

At a yard. . I looked at four different tachs and all four had them so you should have no problem finding one. I think it just simply pops off but have a small flat head ready in case there is a tab to push.

Tachometer gives engine speed, these are ALL electrical.
Speedometer gives vehicle speed, some of these are electrical som mechanical.

Just clearing some bad terms used

You need to find out how it doesn't fit. In one case as above the cable retainer is a different size, in the other the drive portion (flat end) of the cable is the wrong size.

In the first case you need the nipple adapter shown above. In the second case you will find a reducer inserted into the back of the speedometer, this just needs removed to fit the larger cable.

"Instrument guage cluster", technically a "Combination guage assembly"
