Hi Folks

had to have my rear main seal replaced last year and they dropped the transmission. When I got the Truck back, I noticed every time I get to about 44 mph the speedometer jitter bugs up to 55 mph. When I let off the gas, the mph drops back to normal. I figure they tweeked something when they hooked it back up. Anyone ever replace a speedometer cable on a 1986 SR5 4WD ? Do I have to get one from Toyota, if they still have one, or is there another brand that will fit ?

Mine had nearly 350,000 miles and this smoothed it out to 90% perfect. Might try greasing it before you go through the trouble of replacing it.

a few questions:

So you are disconnecting the cable from the cluster and transmission ?
Then blowing brake cleaner through the pipe with the plastic piece ?
Does that really get al the way up to the cluster ?
Doesn't it drain back down to the pipe fittng ?
Do you lube anything at the cluster ?

What about cleaning on the transmission hole where the cable screws into ?

Yes, disconnect the cable at both ends. Have a helper or carefully placed rag on the cluster end to catch everything that comes out or it will come right out and make a mess.
Blow the brake cleaner through to loosen up any gunk and dried up grease/oil in the cable.
It most certainly makes its way all the way out. The cluster end of the cable is the only way out and the cans have plenty of pressure in them. Once again, make sure you are prepared to catch the stuff coming out.
You'll get a bit of drain back once you disconnect it all but it doesn't really matter, you're going to blow it all out with air afterwards. You just want to get the nasty stuff loosened up, then blow the whole thing out with an air hose or air duster can to dry it out. Don't forget to spray some new lube in there.

I didn't clean or lube anything in or on the transmission. The transmission is oil filled and all the stuff there gets lubed by transmission oil.
